    • RE: Any former military here?

Spent time in Army Reserve, not nearly the same as active duty.

I didn't start out in IT, started out doing administrative back office work (Executive Assistant, Ofc Mgr, etc.). We're talking what 20+ years ago. Was really good at the exec asst work, but also loved computers on the side and messed around with them. Along the way I had various folks who looked out for me giving me access to computers on my downtime (as an ofc mgr for a dept within a hospital one of the drs i worked for let me borrow one of his personal machines because he was never at home). As a exec asst to a head of consumer lending at a bank I did alot of local pc troubleshooting for coworkers in the dept. The Director noticed this and commented that I should work in IT. To make a long story short he put in a good word for me an I eventually transitioned into a Branch Support role (Level 2 support employees at various bank branches) and never looked back...

    • RE: What Are You Currently Reading Outside of Tech

Finished Dr. Sleep a bit back... so so good... I've got a few things downloaded from my Kindle Library but I just haven't been able to get into anything lately. I've been a huge fan of Dale Brown thrillers for years, but each time I've tried to read the last few books... just haven't felt it. I've go a few fantasy series downloaded but again... just not appealing... and I haven't read any pure sci fi in YEARS... I find myself missing the old days of Asimov, Niven, etc... just showing my age I guess.

@scottalanmiller I'm not saying it doesn't enforce it, I'm saying so far I'm not feeling that it actually teaches it.

DL doesn't really teach anything, it seems to expect you to learn only through failure.

      lol exactly.

@scottalanmiller I'm not saying it doesn't enforce it, I'm saying so far I'm not feeling that it actually teaches it. I remember my 1 yr of Spanish and we spent alot of the time at the beginning going over sentence structure and duo lingo seems to be like learn some words... here's a sentence no that's wrong here's the correct structure, here's some more words, here's another sentence, no that's wrong. I'd like to actually explain the sentence structure and why I choose wrong, etc... still as I said I'm super early in so I'll keep on going...

Annoyingly I just discovered the mobile device VPN I use ExpressVPN doesn't have a kill switch for the Android version of the app... grrrr. Support says its coming but now I'll have to shop for another service... and I liked ExpressVPN too..

    • RE: DuoLingo Challenge

So I messed around with DuoLingo on Saturday after this convo(just did the first full lesson in Spasnih)... and while I think it does a good job my previous concerns returned. I don't know that it does a good job teaching you sentence structure. It dives right into work conversion, and then sprinkles that with some sentence structure composition which from what I remember is actually pretty important since gender has a role in Spanish sentence structure.

    • Weekend at the movies...

Saw Halloween on Friday with the missus, VERY good,
Saw Venom on Saturday, interestingly enough as much of a superhero fan(comic and movie) I am the trailers never did anything for me so I wasn't interested. Then my 13yr says she'd like me to take her to see it... ok.... and... I have to admit it was actually really good...

    • RE: Gaming - What's everyone playing / hosting / looking to play

On the console side finishing up Yakuza Kiwami 2 (I hope they change their mind and remaster the rest of the series as well instead of just releasing the HD upgrades), on my phone the usual rotation of Marvel Strike Force (which replaced Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes a bit back when I became frustrated with the team battles and how debuffing was becoming such a huge part of being successful in arena battles), and Gems of War which I played way back, didn't really get it, then restarted recently and have really gotten into.

@scottalanmiller Right and they leap at that without a full picture, that's all I was admittedly trying to say.

    • RE: What Are You Doing Right Now

Been there with the temperature issues. Got lucky the first time happened to be there when our smaller office with just a few servers had an AC failure. Once we moved to our new building a few years back I purchased an environmental monitor prob with a hosting option so I can get emails and text messages (regardless of the state of our email system) and let's just say the first few months in our building back in 2015 (When we were the very first tenants), and on and off since then those alerts came in VERY handy.

Its often an added cost that isn't factored into these cloud is cheaper sales talks...

Or local.. Don't try and ignore your favored side.

I'd absolutely dispute the statement that folks don't think about backup when data is stored onprem.

In addition... my favored side? I'd say I don't prefer either, simply that each is looked at in a more encompassing view in terms of what's involved in costs.

You're right I switched to Cyborg which is similar enough to Darkly and it gives me a slightly wider view.

    • The Width of the Notification Display in settings.

This is probably small thing that bothers no one but me but I noticed this. When I go into my notifications an sound sections I can't quickly tell if a notification is set to Notification Only or Notification & Email because the width of the minimized dropdown is only wide enough to show the word Notification. I have to actually drop it to see if its set to Only or & Email. making it slightly wider would elevate that.
