Beside the limitation of vendors in your area. Can I get some feedback on major carrier for Phone & internet?

Currently we are using Logix for phone and Verizon for internet. Our contracts will come to an end in November. What are some feedback on ATT, Verizon, TWC, or some other major carrier.
I intentionally left out where I work at because I want your feedback from your current or previous provider.
      Thanks!

Stay away from Windstream (I call them Windscream) -- I don't know if they are available in your area, but if they are, stay far, far away.

This I have never seen happen.

I've seen it happen in my early days... It can happen if you use say... a Repo specifically for say... Mandrake (Mandriva) while you run CentOS (this is just an example, I can't remember the specific distros this actually happened to me with). Gotta make sure any repos you add in are for your specific OS and version -- and not a newer version, or a different distro altogether.

We use GFI Mailessentials here for filtering. A state department that we are required to work with is saying that she cannot e-mail us. It says the e-mail address does not exist. Their domain is on the white list and the white list is at the top of the priority list. We can receive e-mails from other people on her domain and I've been assured that she is typing in the e-mail correctly as per their IT department. Should I bite down on the cyanide capsule I keep in my right molar?

Perhaps not yet. She needs to delete the contact record of the person she is trying to email.

She also need's to start typing their name, and then delete them from the "quick" contacts list (if she hovers her ouse over them, she should see an X show up. Click it to delete).

Then have her exit outlook and try again.

I had a user come to me with a parent who fell victim to one of the "your computer is infected" type scams. They called, and let the caller take control of their machine. They did NOT pay any money though.

The user had their parent unplug and change all their passwords.

I was wondering if there was an utility (such as provided in ComboFix) that lists all files installed or modified within X number of days.

Has anyone had this actually happen to someone they knew?

Do these scams actually install malware/etc that would warrant a total reinstall? Or are they just doing a dog and pony show "looking" like they are doing something to get the user to pony up the money?

Just to be safe, I'd backup all documents and pictures and such, and nuke it from orbit.

    • RE: RemixOS -- Android for the PC

So... I got the Remix Ultratablet. It is still running the 1.5 release of their Android OS (5.0.2). So far, I've got a few of my usual apps installed, and it appears to work fine. There's not a lot of bloat on it, but it does come with its own email and calendar clients, and WPS Office. Nothing that seems outrageous to me. (The calendar client integrates flawlessly with my Gmail account.

It does come with Google Play loaded, so the sky is the limit, pretty much. Google Play will tell you if an app isn't compatible with your device or not. (I tried to install Cortana, but it didn't let me, lol).

The system comes with a screen protector, physical keyboard (magnetically connected, like the iPad covers and Surface keyboards), charging cable and a USB OTG connector so you can hook up a standard USB device (USB hard drive / keyboard / mouse. It may support a powered USB hub or an SD card. I haven't tested this yet. If the battery holds out nicely, this could be a neat little device.

Using it as a laptop will pretty much require a flat surface. It has a kickstand that runs at 40 or 80 degrees. It is a tablet, but it feels kinda heavy. I haven't used it as a tablet much yet, but it definitely feels solid. It's not light like an iPad either.

I have run into a couple of little niggles that could make IM applications less fun to use. In Facebook Messenger, if I hit enter, it creates a new line, and does not send the message. I'll have to test with Skype and a couple of other ones as well.

Overall initial impression is 9/10. I'll bash it around some tonight and see if that changes... oh, and I'll nab some pictures too.

      Hey Joel,

Have you considered a USB over IP type product? I've just been made aware of them and haven't had a chance to use one yet... but basically it is a USB connection with a Network card, and whatever server you want to use it has to run a software package to do so...

It's worth taking a look at.

ok, i see what you mean, i think only this ORM is not efficient, it is nothing but one php file that has so many functions ready to use (about 12000 line of code), so when i call a function for example, the php code has to scan this big php file which i guess it is the root cause of this late, i have to check other ORM

Yes, a PHP ORM would have performance issue simply because PHP is not that performant without further systems to help it. There are several ways to improve this, from Facebook's real time compiler, some caching mechanisms or just moving to PHP 7. But at the end of the day, a PHP library isn't likely the most ideal mechanism for an ORM. Many languages are real time compiled so once loaded, the ORM is very, very fast just because of that.

I need to upgrade my application's development environment from XAMPP to CentOS + Nginx + PHP7 to see what kind of performance gains I can get.

NGinx should not make a difference. but PHP7 should be enormous.

I can tell a big difference with ownCloud + PHP 7 (Nginx) vs ownCloud + PHP 5 (Apache).

PHP7 is the real winner in that arena.

I've heard it is 40% speed boost on average!

That could easily match what I'm seeing. Although migrating from C@C probably has something to do with that too, lol.

When I lived in Clearwater FL, we would always get live shrimp for bait. After a day of zero bites, we had a delicious lunch of grilled shrimp... yep, we seasoned the little bastards and tossed them on the grill alive. #freshness

But they didn't try to escape when you stabbed them with the fork, right? 😉

    • RE: Fundamental Difference in the Mindset for Updates of Linux vs. Windows Admins

I was getting ready to write a couple of posts before I read to the end of the thread... I am glad I waited, lol.

WINE has gotten to the point now where, I think it is becoming quite a viable alternative to running Windows Apps in Linux. I find that some Games actually play better under Linux than under Windows. (And to be fair, there are others that simply don't work at all).

I know some versions of Office, as well as Adobe products have been made to work under Linux/Wine as well.

It might be worth fiddling with a little bit, and testing out to see how feasible such a switch might actually be. Especially if you are having to support old applications on newer computers.

Also, PlayOnLinux works with all apps, not just games... and it makes some of the initial setup and testing with WINE a bit less of a pain.
