So..... if Cryptolocker is capable of deleting all files along with all previous versions, as happened with the poster on Spiceworks, then you need to backup OD4B. Right?

They will still restore Sharepoint sites though, won't they?

    • Backing up OneDrive for Business

Our remote workers use OD4B to store their personal work documents because it seemed quicker and more reliable than using offline files and syncing to our file servers over a VPN. However, I'm concerned about backups and disaster recovery - specifically after a cryptolocker type attack.

I was under the impression that Microsoft take daily backups of all OD4B and Sharepoint Online data and that you can get them to restore all files from backup from a certain point in time. It certainly appears that Sharepoint is backed up, as documented here https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/akieft/2012/01/09/restore-options-in-sharepoint-online/ and other places. But what about OD4B? I assumed that would be the same.

However, reading this Spiceworks thread, it appears not:
      https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1861266-did-you-know-one-drive-for-business

I know there's a lot of love and experience for O365 on ML, and am looking for some definitive answers. Do Microsoft backup OD4B, and if not, how do you back it up? There are a number of backup products on the market, but none of them seem that mature. I've heard Veeam is releasing something this year, but based on pricing for their Exchange Online solution, it isn't going to be cheap.

As a more general point, how do you handle O365 in your disaster recovery plan? With our on-premise systems we do regular restores of our servers (Exchange, Sharepoint, File Servers etc etc) into a lab environment to test, but that's not possible with O365. Do you just trust Microsoft without really being able to test?

      Cripple them? Insane?

We're still talking about on-premise Exchange here?

Thanks. Looks like I'm ok to give it a miss then.

Moving on, how about LAPS (Local Administrator Password Solution)?
      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46899

I have to confess my attitude towards local admin accounts has been lax at best, and I need to change. I don't know whether to implement LAPS or just store local admin account passwords in Keepass or similar (or even Excel).

My current job I've just had a rise and would say it's still under what I would get for a similar role in say London, but cost of living is cheaper here so even's out I guess.

Not even close when you take into account housing costs. The average cost of a house in London is, what, three times that of Wales? There's no way London salaries compensate. I nearly moved to London in 1999 and looked round flats in the centre that I could afford to buy. Regrettably, perhaps, I chose to move north. I couldn't afford anything now. I could commute to London from my current home, but the transport costs would barely cover the extra salary, never mind the extra time I'd have to spend sitting on the train.

The trouble is, there's a lot more jobs in London than Wales!

      Privileged Access Workstations

      Do you use them?

I use separate user and admin accounts, but have never considered using separate workstations. How common a practice is this? TBH, I'd never even heard of PAWs until the other day.

Does everyone here pretty much use Office 365 for email, then?

      On-premise still here.

I think some of the ranting against your employers by certain posters on here is way OTT. They haven't asked you to go and club some seals. There was clearly a massive breakdown in trust between your predecessor and your employers and that's going to affect how much they trust you, rightly or wrongly. It's going to take longer than normal for you to build up a good, trusting relationship with them. Once bitten, twice shy and all that.

I wouldn't over analyse your situation. Installing Exchange and AD on a new server should be fun and will make your employers happy. Just enjoy it.

    • RE: Server 2008 VM w Oracle: backup question

I prefer just using Veeam rather than having a separate maintenance plan to backup the database outside of Veeam. Mainly, I guess, because of laziness, though partly because I prefer Veeam to log successful/unsuccessful backups. If I didn't use Veeam, I'd have to have another process for checking successful database backups. This is for SQL Server, but the same would apply for Oracle.

Maybe you are not getting advice from the right places.

This is not about me, but you raise a good point. It costs time (and thus money) just to find the right place to look. So in your example, a home user might only need 15 minutes of expert advice, but where does he find that advice? The search costs money.

In our dishwasher example, where do you find an expert that will charge 15 minutes of his time to help you out?

It's the scale of economics in play. A single purchase doesn't warrant the extra spend.

Spot on. Expertise tends to be a fixed cost. If it cost $1000 to pay someone to tell you the best dishwasher to buy, if you buy 1000 dishwashers it only costs $1 per dishwasher for the expert advice. If you buy 1 dishwasher, it costs you $1000 per dishwasher.

Also note that the search only displays a small list of results. It doesn't display everything. So, for example, if you had six apps with "Game" in the title, it might only display three of them. You can display more by filtering on Apps in your search settings.

    • RE: Storage question

Haven't read everything on this thread, but have one question. The OP says the problem with Dropbox is " (slow - downloading, uploadig - internet outage)."

If that's the only problem with the current solution, couldn't the answer be to improve the internet connection? That might not be the cheapest solution but I'd have thought it would be the most simple. I appreciate it might not be possible depending on the location.

    • RE: Windows 10 Search

You have to do a bit of configuration with libraries and Windows Server indexing and stuff to get it to search network shares, I believe? I haven't done this, but might. Are you lot keeping files on local drives? I don't keep anything locally.

Also, I believe it searches OneDrive by default, but I'm not sure if that includes ODfB? Is it easy to get it to search Sharepoint Online, as this is something I will probably need to do soon.
