I'd suggest the below but there are lots of them out there.
      http://powerquality.eaton.com/Products-services/Backup-Power-UPS/5S.aspx?cx=3

That's kind of what I was thinking.

I spoke to Eaton, and they recommended the 5P1500.

But trying to go the "cheap" route has been getting me in trouble here. 🙂 I just want to know VA/WATTAGE wise if they are the same, why go for the servver-grade model?

The "S" model you recommnded is less than half the price.

      Another question...

I'm assuming it is going to be based on run time, but it seems like UPS manufacturers always seem to want to sell me something that seems to be 10x more than I need.

For a 495W power supply, what kind of UPS would you be thinking about?

Also, would you go "server grade" or just go with a nice desktop unit.

I'm talking specifically about my (2) 495W power supple DELL T320, but I'm just asking in general.

Was there ever a comment/decision on whether to run both power supplies into 1 UPS, 2 UPSes, or 1 UPS and a regular surge protector?

In my location there is just the one circuit. I have no other options.

Stick with the concepts of a platform level backup (images taken agentlessly) and host level backup (agents inside the OS, works on physical systems, too.)

I think I get it, then.

Which method do most SOHO/SMB use, or it entirely driven by circumstance?

Those are one and the same.

I guess VM backups have me confused, then.

I thought you could either backup the VHD files through the Hyper-V server itself, or the VM through the Vm (as a client on the VM).

They are very similar. ODfB integrates with the whole O365 stack, though, so if you have that nothing will compare.

Yeah as you know, as much as I complain I do like Microsoft, and almost everyone else I deal with also does.

So I'll have to look into ODfB.

Well, I'm not sure what new features I would need.

I have two of them, and they both need new batteries. So I am going to be spending, just trying to decide the best place to spend.

    • Server UPS Recommendations

      Hi:

I have purchased a new Dell PowerEdge T320 with dual 495W power supplies.

I typically only plug one power supply into a UPS.

I have two older (probably 10+ years) SmartUPS 1500 units that I have just been replacing batteries in. Should the actual housing be replaced from time to time? Would it be a good idea to buy a whole new UPS unit?

If so, what do people here generally like?

You use something like Veeam to backup your VMs to whatever Backup storage you have.
Veeam takes care of the whole thing, you don't worry about the VHDX.

      My question, I guess, is....

If I had the VHDX, then hardware would be totally out of the equation. I would think if I back up the VM itself as a server, it needs to be restored as such.

But I will admit to being unfamiliar with the backup of VMs, having on physical servers as the current juncture. (Soon to change though, hence the questions. 🙂 )

Every server should be virtualized 100% of the time. That includes the disaster recovery. Any use of a physical server is negative.

For DR ... how do you back up the VM? The actual machine itself? Or the VHDX file?

Those discussions have been 100% about why imaging as a process is not generally appropriate for workstations. In every case it has been pointed out that for servers it is standard and generally very good to be able to do. No amount of it being a poor technology choice for desktops would imply that it is bad for servers.

I meant that in that sometimes it is a chore to get the BMR working, and sometimes it doesn't at all.

The "store the data separately" concept.

Obviously that wouldn't work for database servers, etc..

Well, there is a license inside the backup indeed. We added some “additional care”, so once you perform a bare metal restore VEB that resides in the machine will kick of the windows activation in the background with the key from the backup.

In case its original hardware OEM should be pushed like a charm. To tell the truth I’ve even tested it with non-original machines – it was successfully activated from time to time, but, I guess that depends on the OEM, hardware vendor and MS licensing. (As a regular end user – I’ve tested ASUS to HP bare metal recovery with OEM windows 8.1 on board)

This is what a lot of the discussion has centered around.

It's been brought to my attention that activation is separate from licensing.

If you go from OEM to OEM, even if it activates, it is still an illegal license, since you can't image OEM. Right @scottalanmiller ?

BTW: things are ridiculously fast on this new temporary machine.

It's just an i3 or an i5, but I think the SSD is what is making it fast.

      Sorry it was 126GB.

And it might have only been 60 minutes. I didn't time it because I hightailed out of there to get to a Wawa for a hoagie. Then a second Wawa when the first was closed for some inexplicable reason.

It's not an array. It's from the Datto to the new server, in the BMR environment.
