So, we've been using nagios with the pnp4nagios add-on which gives nagios the ability to graph the performance data for a long time. But I am seeing that pnp4nagios is no longer maintained, and that they seem to have dropped it before they made it compatible with php7. So, I'm now looking for open source alternatives.

I still like nagios. It isn't pretty, but it is extremely functional, especially if you know it well like I do. I'd prefer to find something that works well with nagios like pnp4nagios did, but I am open to all options at this point, though I still need something that will work with nrpe most likely, as we have a lot of custom monitoring setup through that. Worst case scenario, we keep nagios around just for the custom monitoring, and other more generic monitoring can go to the new system, but that wouldn't be ideal.

So, what do you suggest? What's the best way to get graphing with monitoring? Thanks in advance.

@travisdh1 I'm fairly certain that that particular site is gone. They discontinued it. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any other possibly similar sites. Thanks.

I don't remember the old site address as it has been down for a year or two. I do recall when they took it down though, there were a number of admins who were disappointed. As I recall, it was a grid where it had listed all of the major ISPs across both the top and side, and it showed how strong (or weak) the connections were between each of them, color coded with red, yellow, and green.

No, they appear to either do ping checks of various websites, or they record and display complaints of site outages. Not quite what I was looking for.

There used to be a website that I went to if I wanted to see if there were connectivity issues between various ISPs. They took that site down, and I'm having a hard time finding anything else like it. Does anybody know if there are any good internet health monitoring sites out there?

I think I'd rather not install an entire desktop to manage VMs. That seems like taking a step in the wrong direction to me.

I would like to move away from proxmox, but haven't decided which direction to go. Also... making those migrations isn't easy when you are short on hardware. I do, however, like having an interface for day to day maintenance. I love the cli, but for some things a gui is nice. In my opinion, this is one of those things.

Yeah, it's just a management interface. It simplifies management somewhat.

It was in use before I got here, and though we don't pay for it (we have to deal with annoying reminders, but otherwise it seems to work fine) it seems to work ok. What solution do you prefer?

Yeah, this conversation on VPNs and Firewalls is a tangent, based on someone saying that they didn't like virtualizing their VPN server.

I understand the point, and on that point you are absolutely correct. My question is in practice, are you actually trying to hit that 100% mark? It seems like the services would do well to have a little buffer room in there, considering spikes in load and all. But maybe we're talking apples and oranges here. I'm thing production web / database servers, where speed is a priority. Maybe you are considering a less sensitive work load?

If you are hitting 100%, I presume you then back off a little? That seems... unhealthy in the long term.

Hey. We use virtualization here, and heavily at that. But there are a couple of instances where I have some reservations about that and whether it is the best way to go. We do some serious data processing at night, and I'm not sure we get as good of disk IO on virtual disks as we might like. We also have occasional telephoney issues that I wonder whether they are related to the fact that the sip servers are virtual. So, my questions: is there ever a time when you do not want to virtualize a server? If so, under what circumstances? Specifically, do you virtualize your sip servers and heavy disk IO servers?

@tim_g, I"m not doubting the correlation, just the causation. (Did you know that there is a correlation between teacher salaries and beer sales? And no, teachers are not big drinkers.)

So, I read the abstract, but not the full article because of the pay wall, but I can't help but to think of my stats class and how they stressed the concept that association is not causation. I would love to see what they controlled for in the study, but it seems too good to be true to me: "Her team found that coffee was associated with fewer deaths due to heart disease, cancer, respiratory disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease". Results like that are usually indicative of differences in social-economic classes, access to sufficient and healthy foods, stress levels, exercise, etc, and not a single food item. I mean, unless they have a plausible explanation of how coffee prevents diabetes, then to me it seems like they are just selling snake oil.

The other doctor's quote seems to me to be more on point: "we are increasingly reassured that coffee is not harmful." This, to me, seems closer to the truth.
