So PBX. I am almost finalising Elastix, just need to check the phones and the overall setup check and then suggest this.

On the file server side, one good think I just learned that they are using google apps for business already, so may be its best to integrate a Synology NAS with local storage and sync to Google Drive. I am still waiting to get the details on the type of plan they have with google apps.

They work on shared files. Owncloud could be an option but then I still need to find an offline storage solution. They also need backup with email notification so the boss can make sure his files are being backed up!

    • PBX and file sharing solution

      Hi guys,

One of my friends requested me to check his company infrastructure and help his IT guys to make some changes.

They basically have an old Panasonic PBX server with analog phones but willing to change to IP phones now, First thing came to my mind is to suggest to setup something like Elastix/3cx and during my search I am pretty much planning to tell them to use Elastix- @scottalanmiller seems to be a big fan of Elastix and saw the post talking about his cancellation of 3CX ๐Ÿ™‚

I still need to do some research on the IP phones to be used (have polycom/alcatel in mind), any suggestions?

Next thing what they want is to have a proper file sharing solution, in that office almost 95% are MAC and they have a windows small business server! which does nothing. Files stored on a Seagate black armor with smb and cifs configured and users access it using that.

They want to have offsite access of these files and also would like to have an offsite backup of the files. Since they are planning to change the storage drive due to space requirements, currently looking at 6TB data, I am thinking of looking at QNAP NAS with backup to google drive, so external access can be given via google drive

      or

Completely avoid local storage and give them box accounts, as they would like to have reporting on file sharing, granular access etc. But still not decided, they have a 40Mb internet line, and so speed is not an issue but I am still leaning towards an onsite storage with google drive just to avoid the issue of loss of access due to an internet outage.

Another option came to my mind was to use local storage, enable offsite backup to crashplan and give them pertino for accessing their internal network

Its all ideas now, need to sit down evaluate the costs per solution and see what is the most feasible option for them.

      What are your recommendations?

    • Site to Site VPN with Digital Certificate

      Hi guys,

My friend has some doubts on ASA site to site vpn and he was looking for answers on some forums, forwarded me the query, thought of posting it in ML and see if I could help him.

      Please check below request:

*I would like to know the requirements needed for configuring Site to Site VPN with Digital Certificate.

We have 3 geolocations and they are connect with site to site VPN. Currently we are using pre-shared key for authentication. To make more secure we are planning to use digital certificate instead of pre-shared.

I really donโ€™t know which certificate can be used and how to configure. I have some doubts regarding that and I request anyone to help me.

      1. Currently we have wildcard certificate for remote VPN, can we use that certificate for site to site authentication

      2. Do we required any CA Server like Microsoft CA Server

      3. Does certificate authentication support in fail-over scenario.

      4. Do i need to create separate certificate for each ASA.

Please help me to configure Digital certificate authentication with 3 ASA 5510. Our plan is to configure this without a CA Server and using the current wildcard certificate.

Also request to provide me the prerequisite for asa site to site vpn certificate authentication, so that i can prepare a document based on that.*

Hope to get some advise from here to help him

      @scottalanmiller said:

There really isn't. Every website has completely unique in its CPU and memory needs. And there are so many factors like CDN caching, web server, cache mechanisms and such that really make things complex. In the real world you need to do testing to see what kind of load is generated by what kind of traffic for a site.

We've suggested client to do a simulated test on the test server and see the required specs. Thanks a lot for the advice.

      Hi all,

I would like to know how do you plan for a server hosting for a high traffic website/campaign. I am still trying to find the best logical calculation for CPU, RAM and bandwidth for cloud hosting like Azure/AWS. Is there any formula or any base calculations i could use if I have the concurrent connection numbers?

      @scottalanmiller Thanks!

I am looking at a server with the below specs.
      2 Intelยฎ Xeonยฎ E5-2690v2, 3.0GHz, 25M Cache, 8.0GT/s QPI, Turbo, HT, 10C, 130W, DDR3-1866MHz
      128GB RAM

This way we could have the VMs fired up based on the solution required with multiple servers. Apart from that the usual things like TFS server, and a UAT server which will be always available.

      The dev team each will have a Lenovo W540 laptop, Intelยฎ Coreโ„ข i7-4930MX (Up to 3.0GHz, 8MB L3, 1600MHz FSB),32GB,512 GB SSD.

    • Build SharePoint development farm

      Hi all,

Oh, I like the new preview feature! ๐Ÿ™‚

After a short break I am back for a (short time) ๐Ÿ™‚ (Actually busy on planning my wedding! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yes, am getting married, should've been a bit more formal announcement than adding it on this post! ๐Ÿ™‚

      Ok, back to business.

My senior management approached me and asked me to get the pricing and setup a SharePoint development farm as they are getting SP dev team (new addition to our dev team- we are mainly on PHP projects). I am searching to find an ideal setup solution for the SP dev team.

One of the requirements I got was to have high end laptop for the developers (quad core, 32GB RAM) so they could develop the SP 2013 sites.

I am not sure which path to go with; get high end laptops for dev team and then get a mid size server for UAT or

get high end server which can run like 6 servers replicating the production environment (2 WFE, 2 App, 2DB), so we could build solutions and test it on most possible scenarios too. Our SP solution could range from small website to large websites/intranet portal

Also needs to decide on the storage part as well. I was asked to prepare 2 options, one with the best option and another with the minimum recommended option. Ideally I am thinking about good laptops for users+ a scalable server where we could fire up 2 vm for development (AD+SP) and then another group of vms for replicating clients production environment which might have exchange sever, ad, SP with multi tier server to do the deployment tests before giving it to the client.

      Please share your thoughts.

    • RE: MPLS speed issue

@Reid-Cooper Sorry for not explaining the whole situation on my initial post.

We are part of a global company now. Now for maintaining IT, each locations has their own offices which centralises that regions agency/acquired companies. In our case India comes under the IT company of APAC (Asia pacific) which connects to their datacenter in asia and UAE managed by this regions IT company connecting to a different datacenter.
I think we are the first one who has branches of companies which comes under different IT setup/regions. So India users connecting to the asia datacenter on MPLS, same here in UAE connecting to the other datacenter. But the connecting between these two datacenter are not MPLS, but on IPSEC, not sure why this was done this way.

Riverbed, as I've seen from their demo video, caches the files once accessed, so even though it might not fix the latency issue, users will have faster access to the files. We are still in touch with their IT teams to find a possible solution
