Decision on Remote Support Tool- ScreenConnect
Hi all
Joined a new company
Part of my role is to optimize and do continuous improvements to the IT Infrastructure, and I would like to implement a good remote support tool for end user support (around 250 users as of now). I am thinking about getting the on premise version of screen connect as I've personally used this before and know that a lot of you here use that as well.
Just wanted to check with the community before i make the decision on this. Are there anything that could be a blocker on going forward with this? The pricing page says its $2,195 but not sure if this is one-time fee or a yearly renewal cost.
I am thinking about setting this up on a CentOS 7 server, but a rough search gave me some topics here about some issues for screenconnect with centos7. Not sure if there is a windows based setup available. And planning to have this as an on-demand support tool rather than installing it as an agent on all machines; may be i might decide installing it on all users except the senior management. (For them it would be on demand to make sure that no one gets into their machine without a ticket) I am currently working on few other high priority projects that i do not have much time to check this in details, so asking your help!

Suggestions on HP laptop for work
I am currently evaluating work laptop for my new work and was given the option to choose HP (either HP ZBook Studio or Spectre X360). Any recommendations on which one to go for? 16GB with 256/512GB SSD is what I am looking for.

RE: Book suggestions
My new job involves long drives and looks like Audible is one good option and I really think everyone should read the Phoenix project. There are times when some of the events on that book closely resembles to what we do. I am pretty much convinced to proceed with an audible subscription as i started enjoying audiobooks while driving.

I enjoyed reading through The Phoenix Project - for one thing, the first chapters made me feel better about the workload I had on my plate
But the whole book itself was a great (fictional) case study on shifting from traditional Development & Operations departments to a DevOps environment. It's basically a story of a dysfunctional enterprise IT environment getting better, told from the perspective of someone uniwttingly tossed into the role of IT director. It helped me see the problems DevOps practices solve along with the challenges that can arise when shifting over to them.
Old thread, was thinking about posting about this book and found this!
I just signed up for Audible trial and started with this book. Just on chapter 5 but i am already liking it!

RE: MangoCon 2017
As I said, I really wanted to meet you all, was just thinking about this last year, and was super happy to get things moving this year and booked everything, but not all went as planned.
On the brighter side, this switch is very good for me in all means. In a holding company here in UAE which has education, healthcare, properties etc under that, so from the current tech consultant covering web hosting services to more on the enterprise computing that involves SAP, O365, intune etc. So yeah, interesting and challenging phase ahead!

RE: MangoCon 2017
I got a new job and in the process of moving to the new one which involves visa changes and passport with the government authorities for some time, plus the first project I will be on, the deadline is on July 30! So I have to cancel this year's trip!
Really wanted to make it this year. Hope to make it next year. So its a mix of both good and bad news for me! Canceling all my bookings currently.

Help Haydee
Reaching out to ML for helping one of my friends who is struggling to keep her job.
https://www.youcaring.com/haydeenavalsinglemom-841214
This is posted by her daughter:
"To summarise, my mom has just been dragged in the situation but her intention is to just help her brother cope up. She needs to pay the amount to get her passport back, and get renewed of a visa and stay in her current work and in UAE. She is a single mom raising 2 kids. It would be so bad if she lose her job in the UAE and arrange a way back to Philippines." -
RE: Dropbox Smart Sync
One drive now has similar feature (files on demand)
"With Files On-Demand, you can access all your files in the cloud without having to download them and use storage space on your device. You don’t have to change the way you work, because all your files—even online files—can be seen in File Explorer and work just like every other file on your device."

RE: Audiobooks
@jrc said in Audiobooks:
The "free" audible with Prime is very limited in scope, you'd have to subscribe to the full Audible to get audiobooks.
That said I drive, like a lot, 2 hours each way to work everyday. And audio books are a big part of what keeps me sane. If I went the audible way then I would be bankrupt pretty quickly.
Libraries are a good place to get audio books, but I still go through them faster than I can get them, though most libraries have online digital checkout options for audio books, so check with your local library on that.
When all else fails I torrent audio books. I belong to a private torrent community that does nothing but audio books. It has come in very handy.
I really wish someone would start a Netflix type audiobook service, and all you can listen to flat rate service.
4 hours of drive! What else you do during that long drive?
I like the idea of a Netflix kind service, but if you look at it Amazon probably covers a huge library of books! I wish Audible had an unlimited book options on a flat rate.

Audiobooks
I would like to sign up for Audible, but looks like on the monthly plans of around $14 you can only use 1 book. Also looking at the Amazon prime membership which i believe includes Audible and unlimited prime reading (with audible narration). Just wanted to know what you guys use.

RE: HP Laptops Found with Keylogger Built Into Audio Driver
So looks like HP released a patch for this https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/hardware/hp-releases-driver-update-to-remove-accidental-keylogger/
So most vendors have something on their machine, previously Lenovo, now HP. Getting any machines from a vendor, first thing should be wipe it and install a pre tested, custom build, hope that solves all such issues and guess most companies are already doing it
