IT in TV Shows

Mr Robot had so much promise but I stopped watching halfway through.
I just got bored of the drug scenes, I really don't care for it. It had so much potential and promise and it's like they flushed it down the toilet.
From a tech point of view, Mr Robot is amazing, just not convinced the story needed to be about that, there are plenty of us in IT who don't smoke.
Yeah I wondered how that's going to go along, it seems to be playing a bit into the hacker stereotype there with the weed...but then I'd be lying if I said I wasn't like that a few years ago, before I made a career in IT...
I guess that bit ties into his social insecurities etc, so that's how they're going with that line, but yeah, will see how it continues as I go further into the season..

The problem is, for once we have a really intelligent TV show, which gets all the tech facts right (mostly) and could completely change perspectives.
But oh no, here's the weed smoking hacker who is completely introverted and awkward.
Here is the violent CEO type who will stab anyone to get his way.
I just think they could have been smarter with the characters.

Yeah, sounds like it, but then, this is the era in which the FBI and Mi5/GCHQ have lifted the restrictions on people who have used weed working for them, for the reason they weren't getting some of the best hackers due to that...amongst other reasons no doubt...So they're playing to stuff that's in the public eye more than what the truth within groups like this is, if that makes sense? At least it's getting better with the hacking/tech stuff in general, the use of Linux etc becoming more "mainstream"...
And tbh most CEO's I've worked with seem to have a similar mentality? That's how they get successful, by being ruthless...doesn't make them good bosses, but makes them successful in their business...

IT is television and movies is just horrible. Doesn't matter what the show is. What is amazing is that these shows all must have IT staff and they must never take the time to meet them or ask them for advice. It's probably a reflection of how these places view their own IT teams.

Remember the homeless guy scene? - Do you think most CEOs do that kind of thing?

Right, I got up to episode 5 or 6 then had to stop. The drug stuff in the first 2-3 episodes I was ok with, it just takes a turn for the silly later on.
Keep watching

lol, IT in TV shows? HA!
In The Mentalist, their Cisco IP phones aren't even on.Most shows fail the smartphone test as the phones screen is on while it's up to their ear and their jibber jabbering away. There is a proximity sensor that turns this off. Shouldn't people research how stuff works?
-
I agree that this show gets IT right (at least about the best I've ever seen). Yeah the drug crap is just that, but they have to give dimension to the character otherwise people will get bored with a 'techie' show. The hardcore drug crap simmers out after another 2 episodes - I really suggest that you give it a chance and make it through the cruft to get back to the story.
Yeah that guy who wants to become CIO - oh man!!!! just watch!

Yeah that's my point, it's so B/S in the majority of shows this one came as a pleasant surprise they get commands right, and the processes right...and it just feels right...plus the main character reminds me of a dude I used to chill with... :')

Ho-lee Krap!
I just this minute saw a proximity faux pas on Big Bang Theory! A show about geekiness and neediness and they can't get their gadgetry correct!? -

There is so little basic common sense tech checking on it. I remember like the first episode they talked about how they were "so high tech" and had a T1. A T1 was embarrassing and a decade out of date by the time that episode first aired. Even the non-technical people on the show should have noticed how embarrassingly inappropriate that was and that it made the main characters incredibly non-technical and that they were anything but into computers, they didn't care about them at all.
I lost interest right there. I knew that they weren't taking their material seriously. And the characters are just insanely annoying and shallow. There is nothing to the show. None of it is well thought out and they just throw buzzwords around. Shows about "smart people" written by dumb people are the most annoying things ever.

Oh yeah. They are like Best Buy computer guys in that show. They are losers, not techs.

Not always... but a stupidly high percentage yeah...
Maybe we should make a TV show with loads of stuff we actually do/use?
-
@NattNatt Omg that would be really funny... if a regular sitcom just got everything IT correct for the most part.
