Xen Orchestra / Metadata backup?
-
Calling @olivier to answer that.

Even with XO you will want to back it up, as you want your system to be able to run even when XO is not there, for whatever reason. You want to avoid XO being a dependency, even if it offers that capability.
However, it is also important to note, that metadata for VMs is great to have, but you can recover without it. You might need to do manual work, but you can still recover your VMs.

There is actually a free metadata backup script over on Spiceworks.
-
@scottalanmiller Thanks, but I would expect a product like XO to address this issue. I know that they have been removing some metadata from their backups, but unsure how / if that changes things from the end user's perspective.

A git repo of that might be a bit more useful
-
That's a great idea. A guide to setting that up and automating it would be awesome.
-
Possibly include how to use your existing NFS Backup target if you have one.
-
@scottalanmiller I just noticed that I was the last one to comment in that thread.
-
Interesting discussion here from the XO forums.
-
@Danp if it's a bug with XS then that team will have to investigate it..
I'm curious if the export function from XO pulls the metadata with it....
I would assume it does
-
@DustinB3403 I think it does. It sounds like they are just ignoring it during the import process, which leads me back to my original question.
-
Is there any good reason why simply linking the disk image backup created by XS to a fake domU wouldn't be sufficient, it would then be included in my DR backups? In a recovery situation, you'd just need to restore that first, and reload the data... or am I missing something?

@mark_arnold Welcome to MangoLassi!

Hi,
What kind of host metadata you would need to backup?
-
@olivier In the event of a catastrophic failure, wouldn't the pool metadata from
xe pool-dump-database
orxe-backup-metadata
assist in restoration of the pool after reinstalling XS? -
IDK what's inside those data ^^ Do you have the output of these to understand exactly what's inside this backup?
-
The commands are discussed here. You should be able to run them from the host's console to quickly generate the files for further analysis.
-
Getting a big fat XML. Yay.
-
Can you open a issue with specifications about how you would like to have this handled? Thanks!

Citrix says to not back up the host and it appears that megadata is stored on the SR. Has anyone attempted to restore without the metadata backup to see what would come up as missing? Having done something basically like this, I thought that I got all of the data that you would be looking for (minus logs.)
