IRC Chat?
-
We should get one!
-
What's wrong with the forum?
-
@coliver Nothing.
-
I'm actually building one for my Pops... I bet we can sneak us a room in there too.
-

He's got some friends that like to hang out on his IRC server.... (they're all carryovers from when he worked the MSNBC & CNN interactive chats during various shows.
They all like mIRC / MSChat, lol. He's upgrading his server, so I'm helping him get it going again.
-
@dafyre What a good son!
-
@anonymous I try.
-
Hosting a IRC server should be pretty lightweight? What server software are you using @dafyre?
-
I'm not sure yet. He's got one that is expiring on him, so we're going to switch to a different one. If you know of any good / easy ones for Linux, I'm open.

IRC is cool but we are specifically avoiding it here. Don't want to siphon the community off to another place. IRC takes all the knowledge and discussion and at best, splits it up and at worst causes it to be lost.
-
NTG has run its own before. I like IRC, it is very handy for a company chat system.
-
Except you generally get no record of the chats except on the server-side, right?

Correct, it's not for things that you want to keep. It's for ephemeral conversations.

and here there is documentation for all of the derailed threads.

At Vates, we use Shout IRC (self hosted). Pretty easy to use even if you are not used to IRC. And it acts like a bouncer, so you can reconnect from anywhere, it saves your history/connection/discussions.
edit: but mainly for internal discussions and sometimes people asking questions. A forum is needed to have a real community.

An awesome chat system attached to the forums would be great - but even better, is a tie into a universal chat system would be best, so users only need to use one chat system for anything they are doing, and not 15 different apps depending on where they are.

Pidgin and some of the others tie in to multiple services. I think it has IRC support as well.

That's a universal client, he wants a single, unified, global messaging platform from a single vendor.

I have thought of setting up something to connect the kids iPads too.. not anything outside of my control. so that I can harass them from time to time when they are playing Mine Craft.
