Data Center Best Practices

What "Data Center Best Practices" would you be most interested in learning from a BICSI Certified Data Center Design Consultant? So many different topics - Airflow, power, blanking panels, cooling, cable management, mounting equipment, safety, monitoring, security? What sticks out as the key points for you guys?

I'd like to know what I can do to make my small setup (couple or three racks) more efficient. Often we just throw kit into the rack and think nothing of it. Is there a method to your madness?
Specific questions
We leave 1u between stuff whenever possible (recent consolidation has gained us almost a whole spare rack were we to crunch it all together) - is this desirable from a cooling perspective? It sure makes them easier to work on.
Tips for cabling? We're pretty decent at wrangling the spaghetti but if you know of any products or tips that make your life easier I'd like to hear em.

Do you have front to back cooling like hot aisle cold aisle? The racks should be sealed front to back when possible

lol we have top down cooling - it's highly custom. One big AC unit in ceiling blowing cold down.
Nothing is sealed, no doors front or back, no sides on racks.

We pack the racks full.
