Gluster
Gluster is terrible for VM storage (no caching, beyond client memory, brick healing can kick of a file lock and crash a VM). I tried to make a VSA off of it ~2013.
CEPH in theory can be used, but its performance is bad for streaming workloads (Strangely random doesn't suck). Most serious openstack deployments use something else for storage for this reason (or go all flash).
I do agree that what makes a "HCI system" is the simplicity of management and integration between the storage and hypervisor. I built a VSA DRDB system on VMware back in ~2009. It was kludgy to manage, painful to expand, and slow. Modern systems that can leverage flash, don't have file system or nested VM overheads etc are a LOT better idea.

@crustachio The VDX's issues with bugginess were for layer 3 bridges back in the day. The only outstanding issues I"m aware of involve Cisco wireless controller gratuitous arps. They are limited on multicast PIM-Sparse was another gotcha on the big chassis. They are pretty stable these days, and most people for "serious" BGP edge layer 3 use MLXe's anyways. The VDX is more about having a L2MP fabric for heavy east/west workloads.
-
@crustachio I thought their tier system was based on a mix of drives in a node, not a mixture of host types in the cluster. From my understanding of SCRIBE you would end up with 1/2 the IO coming from flash and 1/2 coming from NL-SAS disks (until you fill up one tier). That's going to make for interesting latency consistency, unless they added some extra intelligence onto it (So both copies will always be on one tier or another).
-
New nodes are being joined to the cluster today... very excited.

God I really want a scale system in my rack!

Especially a six node, Winchester / SSD tiered one!

With the holiday I've been pretty caught up in stuff. Back at my desk today and hopefully this will all be back and online very soon!

You mean you actually have a desk there? I'm shocked... I figured they'd just let you borrow the empty closet or something for your visit.

Well, the kitchen table.

If we wait till Thursday to do everything we can do a full video (would be with my cell phone).
I think ML needs to invest in a GoPro.
but the ultra wide angle on them would mean you saw nothing of what they were unboxing.
You can change that in settings (you know that by now I'm sure, but maybe others don't) I prefer "Narrow" for unboxing or tutorial videos.

That's fake. It doesn't change the angle. It crops. Not the same thing at all.

It's not really that simple. An easy comparison for cropping would be something like full-frame (FX) vs. cropped (DX) and looking at the comparison. The cropped sensor on a DX body really just takes a portion out of an FX shot, and blows it up, making it look a little blown out and blurry compared to an FX photo.
Cause it's not necessarily cropping as much as it is stretching when you go to the wide setting, to get the angles, so the edges sometimes look a little more distorted than medium or narrow. If it were merely cropped, the center would be the cropped shot, and look somewhat warped rather than squared up across the the whole field of view.

Other than only using the center of the sensor, what is it doing?

Hard to find some good supporting material. The only thing I can find so far is going from the (new-ish) 4k and 2.7k down to 1080p. That definitely crops cause you're essentially just taking a 1080 portion of the 4k video, so it'll look a bit enlarged and blown out. Same thing going from FX to DX. I'll see what I can find though. There has to be something out there that explains it a lot better than I can.

It's changing the degree of the shot. Not the same thing... It's the exact same picture, nothing has been cropped or chopped out. If you were to take a picture and crop it, you're essentially just cutting out a piece of that, and blowing it up to scale (which would make it blown out and somewhat blurred). When you change the viewing angle, you're taking the same 1080 picture that you'd see with that sensor (viewing angle doesn't matter except for light, which is a whole different can of worms), and just opening it out to a different aspect ratio.

More on that, it's still the same picture. You're just choosing to view a certain portion of that, it's not cropping it though because that would distort the image. It's almost as if you put your hands on the side of your eyes like blinders. To take them away is the same as switching to medium or wide. To crop though, is to take what you see in front of you and stretch it. It's hard for me to explain things, but I chatted GoPro for clarification and it's not cropping. It's the same shot, it's just changing the field of view is all. Cropping is a huge degradation in picture quality.

You are just describing cropping. That's literally how we test cropping.

So what I was told from GoPro doesn't equal exactly what their pro tech guys have for their field guide. In short, it is cropping. So you're right, and all my chatter was just white noise.
