From that page and this one: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6566245

it appears Lion and Snow Leopard which I also found on this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook#Model_specifications

I have a spare SSD to replace the HD and would like to get familiar with the OS so I don't have to turn away more Mac clients.

Well the downloads I have tried all were garbage and didn't work. I guess I will be purchasing Snow Leopard from Apple for $20 and wait for it to be mailed to me.

@thecreativeone91 Did you find a good place online? Everything I downloaded as a dmg was not usable to create a boot disk.

The original is a DMG. You can either use a mac to make the DVD or use something like TransMac on windows http://www.acutesystems.com/scrtm.htm

Also Note: that only certain mac's can boot from USB. This generation likely can't I think that computer would've been still using Firewire Target Drive Mode.

There's also this. No idea if it would keep it bootable though. http://vu1tur.eu.org/tools/

@thecreativeone91 I meant to say the tools needed to burn the dmg failed due to the downloaded dmg files I found.

You're burning that dmg file to a dual layer DVD right? They won't burn to a regular DVD+R

Yep. I believe they are like 6.5GB so you def need a DL DVD.

                      Thanks @thecreativeone91 and @tonyshowoff ,

I know I need a dual layer dvd however the dmg I downloaded won't even extract using 7zip and transmac didn't recognize the dmg. (following the tutorials that I found online). I deleted the dmg and was looking for another.

                      .

                        .

What's your host OS? You don't extract a dmg, you need to burn as is, you can use imgburn or transmac, and I'm sure there are other tools as well. If you're on OS X you can use the Disk Utility. Keep in mind proprietary formats and metadata are in the dmg, so if your plan was to extract it and burn it, it would've never worked in the first place.

@tonyshowoff I have a Windows 10 TP PC. The hard drive was dead in the Mac. I thought I had to extract the dmg to covert to an iso to boot to the disk since I get nothing at boot using any of the normal commands.

You wouldn't extract the DMG, the dmg is an image format, you'd have to burn it to a DVD or image the USB drive off of it.

Thanks, good to know. No dual layer DVD here. Just downloaded another dmg and will see how I can get the mac to boot to the dmg.

Using TransMac, I choose File and open image and the image shows in left panel. When I click on it I get No Mac HFS volumes found.

                                Nevermind...I'm an idiot!

Plug in the usb in the right side click format with an image. Don't remember the DVD process but it should be similar.
