That's the same as me, I think. But I am not one hundred percent sure that I did not start on 2013. I suppose the update might have been involved since the combination of rules between client and server are new to either 2010 or 2013.

What about setting your rules so that they only work manually? That way everything goes to your inbox (so you can easily catch it on your phone etc.) until you want to move them? I do this a couple times a week.

Hmm... I have rules that I made in Outlook 2013, and the unread mail numbers show next to all of my subfolders in OWA. I'm not sure what could have broken your folders. Have you tried making a new rule since you deleted all of the original ones?

To run rules Manually:
Go to rules in Outlook (no idea if this can be done in OWA)
Manage Rules and alerts
And uncheck your rules that you don't want to auto sort into your folders.
To run rules: click on run rules know under manage rules and alerts.I do this so everything is front and center on my cell phone, or Ipad or..... and then just sort when I am at my desk a couple times a week.

At this time I have no desktop and am just using the browser/web app (OWA) and standard mail apps on Android. Also earlier in the week I had deleted all my rules while in OWA.

@Dominica Can you do the same rules in OWA that you can in Outlook and if so where?

Did you have to delete them? you couldn't disable them instead?

Yes I know I could have disabled, this is why you shouldn't do tech work when really really annoyed! However since this issue has plagued me since I converted my POP to Office 365 (Exchange) and Office 2010 to Office 2013 I just figured it might be an issue.
Fun fact: My .pst started life in XP PC with Office 2003 and I have upgraded it through the years, not to mention how many PC's it's been moved from!

This morning I created one new rule in OWA and I will update if it does anything. #Annoyance: Can't find how "run rules now".

I just ran a test, and OWA's new item count mirrored Outlook. Have you tried a different browser? You mentioned your system has 2 browsers, but didn't mention if you tested with both. Also, check your antivirus and browser plugins/addins. Something may be interfering with the automatic page updates.

Update...
So now that I have removed all rules, created one new rule using OWA, I now have a 1 to the right of the folder that has email!

True...just trying to figure out why the folders in OWA didn't show numbers until I created the rule in OWA.

I have always used the Unread Mail folder added to favorites in my Outlook programs. Since I started Office 365, it would appear that the search folder support is not supported in OWA 2013 (Exchange 2013) according to this website, http://www.msoutlook.info/question/763.
This is part of my issue checking email using OWA as my rules places emails in 2nd - 4th level folder and do not show up. I understand that this is normal behavior on the Desktop app, OWA and of course the Android app. OWA image: .
This was another reason I deleted all my rules and recreated only 2, as you can see Cron is easily seen in the folder list. And if I use OWA on any device including mobile I find it easier to use if I request the desktop app. I am still considering how to run rules that aren't based on multi-level folders, but that will make it a really long list!
So not much of a workaround, but better than nothing.
