Trying something new today but I am pretty sure that this is going to work pretty well. We are testing it with the new @ntg account. The idea here is to have an account that is for a vendor rather than for a person. Obviously there is a certain unofficial nature to this and the mods are going to have to patrol this to some degree to ensure that vendors are really who they say that they are - but that is what the Service Provider flag is for (or something similar.)
The goal here is not necessarily to make an account for the purpose of regular posting, you won't see @ntg posting all over the place. Instead it is so that if someone wants to mention NTG but have NTG get alerted that they are being mentioned you can mention them just like a normal user. That way you don't need to know who works for them or not. It is, I think, extremely useful once we get a number of vendors using this. The idea came about from the ÆtherStore discussion this morning. They have three people in the community but unless you know who they are ahead of time, you would have no idea who to "at" to get their attention. And even if you know some of the people, maybe you know the wrong one or that one is on vacation or is not with the company anymore. So this, in theory, addresses that.
We will test this out for a week or so and then start trying to get some other vendors to use this system too and get them authenticated so that you know who they are. I'm sure that we can get the Webroot guys to try this out with us. What do you think, @nic?

I really like the ones who commented even though their product has nothing to do with the question. Really makes me feel like they are paying attention.
