MangoLassi: Seven Years
-
So after doing loads and loads of platform updates today, and then doing some thumbnail cleanups, it really gave me a moment to look back on ML over the years. For those that weren't around or don't remember, ML started on 3 March 2014. That's just over seven years ago.
Most people know that at the time, this community was spawned from Spiceworks which seemed old at the time, but had only been a community in any sense for six years and only had been a broad IT community for five years. ML has now been an active, broad IT community longer than SW was before ML started. In so many ways, it still feels like ML is so new. But we are quite venerable at this point. It's amazing.
When ML started, we took the chance on an as yet unreleased forum software called NodeBB that was based on the hot new technologies of NodeJS and MongoDB. We had very little time to choose a platform and NodeBB was still in alpha, but it looked really promising and we knew that whatever decision that we made was going to be pretty permanent. We took a gamble, but immediately it started to pay off. The forum was easy to use and incredibly fast.
Back in 2014 we started on CentOS 7 hosting on Linode and we've been running on that platform until today! More than seven years on the original server.
NodeBB has gone through so many revisions. It wasn't even on its first release yet when we started. Today we deployed its sixteenth major release!
MongoDB was still a baby of a database when we started using it. Most people had not heard of it and it felt like a pretty big gamble. It was on version 2.4 when we started. In 2014 we upgraded to 2.6 and in 2015 we moved to 3.0 and over to the more robust WiredTiger engine. At the end of 2015 we upgraded to the 3.2 version that we were running until today (now we are on 4.4.)
So much has changed. In the community, in IT, in technology, and in the world in general. We have been around long enough that the year of COVID remains a relatively small part of our overall history.
Today we have some cool stats. We have had over a half million posts. Approximately 2.5 million unique site visitors. We have about fourteen million "resource hits" per month and over three million complete thread loads. Every day we see about four thousand unique users visit the community. And we've had three conferences already with our fourth only postponed because of COVID!
Seven years in and it feels like it is just the beginning! Thanks everyone for being a part of the ML journey!

@scottalanmiller Lots of newness in 16.x. Been kicking it's tires a bit myself as of late. But... ya' know... 1.17 is almost here!
Congrats & Happy Anniversary!
