New Ransomware - Citroni
-
There's a new cryptolocker-like ransomware out there http://www.webroot.com/blog/2014/07/25/critroni-new-encrypting-ransomware/
-
That's really interesting! So WebRoot has people that actively seek out new viruses to test?
-
Yeah we have a threat research team. They make determinations on new executables that are seen by our database for the first time, and do research into how to defeat and prevent the newest malware that comes down the pike.
-
I've never actually gotten either one of these. but, I keep thinking that someone should just write a program that can break into cryptolockers servers and get the Private Key to unencrypted the files.
As much as these are horrible, you got hand it to these guys just a little but, they figured out how to make good money off a virus by not completely screwing up your computer, but just making you really really want your files back (and most home users don't backup). Now if only they could put some ethics and morals with their ingenuity they could do some good things.

Yeah it is pretty dastardly and clever. That would be funny if someone broke in and got all the keys.
-
The problem is, whomever did it would have to release the keys anonymously since white hat hacking is still illegal.

I predicted it. https://www.decryptcryptolocker.com/
