I think that wigs are simply a category of hat. What do you think?
I'd like to take it a step further and say a wig IS a hat.
Your reasons for wearing them may be different, but that doesn't change what it is.
Yes, I believe a wig IS a hat, that's my feeling. But I do feel that wigs are an identifiable "kind of" hat. If a wig is only a hat, we'd never be sure which thing is a wig and which is a non-wig hat. But we all, generally, know when we have a wig. No one has a cowboy hat on and has someone think it is a wig.
But oddly, people are allowed to wear wigs in places where you are required to remove your hat. UNLESS it is for religious reasons, then you have to remove it. So religiously, wigs are hats, but socially they are often given a pass. but often girls' hats are given a pass on rules and boys' hats are not.
I actually did my senior thesis on hat wearing, believe it or not.

This also leads to the question of why did the Whig Party never get called the Hat Party? Or did they and we've just forgotten?

So, a visor blocks the sun from your eyes, but is not a hat, it doesn't cover your head.
The covering you head portion is what makes something a hat, and a wig. The blocking the sun portion could be a visor or a roof.
A visor is a visor, it's an accessory to keep sun out of your eyes while not compressing the hair on the top of your head.
It doesn't make a wig a hat in any way. .
No, a wig is a hat for other reasons, such as the fact that it just is a hat. A visor, however, meets your definition of a hat while most hats do not. Hence the point.
-
So, it would be safe to say that all wigs are hats, but not all hats are wigs.

But this item must attach to your head in some way. Therefore, negating a roof or tree as a hat/wig.
Correct. A visor, roof, or tree are all sun blocking, non-hat devices. Whereas backwards baseball caps, skull caps, winter woolens, and wigs are are hats, but don't block the sun.
The point being that sun blocking is something a hat might do, but isn't part of the definition of a hat.

Perhaps style then?
Is a sombrero or baseball cap "categories" or "styles" of hats? I think style betters servers what kind of hat a wig would be than category.

Social convention has very little to do with the definition of a hat vs a wig. A wig is a replacement to a loss of hair at the top of your head to which no one is expected to remove their wig in church or at a social convention where it is customary to "remove your hat and stand".
Where have you actually seen people remove their wigs at due to social convention?!

Yes, those would be specific categories of hats. Technically sombrero is misused, it literally just means hat. So used correctly, a wig is a sombrero, as is a fedora or a baseball cap.

Okay bad example then due to the name, but i'm sure you still got my point.

Now a fedora is a group of hats. Many hats, including cowboy hats, are types of fedoras. But wigs are not fedoras.

Unless you are defining a wig as "a distinctive head covering worn as a symbol of office" then a wig isn't a hat. It is simply an accessory to provide an appearance of not being bald. . .

A common use of any hat.

Many people wear hats to avoid looking bald.
Many people with hair wear wigs.
-
And a WIG is define as "a manufactured covering of natural or synthetic hair for the head"
So drop the topic.

That Wig definition would make it a hat, by definition.
