Samsung Galaxy S3... recovery w/ broken screen
-
I have an old Samsung Galaxy S3 from my friend who asked me to recover the pictures on the phone. The screen is shattered... "shattered" The phone does turn on and charging, but I cannot see anything on the screen at all. Is there some tools I can use to get around the broken screen?
I'm doing this at no charge so replacing the screen is not an option (tweaking is an option as long as it costs no additional $$$). Any suggestion?

Attach it to a computer with the USB cable, the storage should appear as a folder (this works on Windows, not sure about any other OS). Or if the pics are on a micro SD card, just remove that and stick it into a card reader attached to a computer.

There is not micro SD card. PC won't recognize the phone... probably has to unlock it first, but it is hard to do so when the screen itself is not working.

@stess I've never had to unlock the phone to get it to work as a mass storage device... could be some other issues with that phone (like a bad USB jack or cable).
-
Unfortunately, unless you can get the phone unlocked I'm fairly certain that the screen will need to be replaced if you want to get anything off of the phone.
Unless those files are really important it's probably not worth the effort, but I have heard of repair shops putting on screens temporarily to retrieve data for a small fee. Might be worth a shot?

No micro SD card and no backups on a phone that is ancient. Good luck!

A local repair shop offered to connect a working display to a phone long enough to pull off the data from a phone for like $30. Tell your friend to pony up and do something like that.

That's pretty cheap for what that is.

i thought so! Originally we were going to pay $110 for a new screen on a S3, but all we cared about was the data, so they connected a new screen, and downloaded all the data to a memory stick. Saved $80 and pitched the phone.

Yeah, most shops have extra parts laying around and plenty of free time to do it. It's just good customer service, and an opportunity to hopefully get them some referrals! They'd be silly not to if they aren't busy.

My local company offered this to me - it was completely unexpected and awesome - they will definitely get a referral in the future.

So... here's an update. I called my local shops to get some pricing for this service... but most of them asking for $60+tax or more. The cheapest I got is $45 an hour for a somewhat shady craiglist post.
My thought right now is to get a new S3 from Newegg, do a mobo swap to get the pictures out, then return the device in its original(ish) condition. What are your recommendation?
I popped the broken phone opens, and I do not see any warranty sticker anywhere.... anyone has any experience on this?
