GNU ddrescue is a Unix utility specifically designed to rescue data at the block level from failed or failing hard drives or devices that present a drive appearance standard interface to a Unix operation system.
What is great about ddrescue is that it copies good blocks when it can and quickly, going back for bad blocks afterwards so that as little is lost as possible during the rescue operation. And it is free, of course.
