Hopefully it was more than 12 years ago. At 12 years ago, the ability to filter this stuff was built into Windows Server 2003. It's only when trying to use a desktop as a file server that this is an issue because that functionality is not included there.

I recall looking into the windows offerings - and it was either not good enough or non existent for the version they were using. Being so long ago... I don't recall which.

Spending money replicating 2003 features to 2000 would be a good justification for looking at updating

You can do this on Linux with a script, should work well. Windows could be scripted too. Would have to decide if you care about extensions, file types (how does Windows do that?) or whatever.

No clue - but I know that the software they purchased didn't look at extensions exclusively - it actually examined the content to make sure people weren't cheating by changing the extension.

Sorry, as I mentioned it was one time 12+ years ago. I do recall it was expensive though - like $1500-2000 per server.
