Helping new people search
-
You shouldn't have to click to make search visible.
For those of already using this forum, it is easy to find the search. New people may not see it and then may leave because they don't feel like they can find what they need.

@ryan-from-xbyte All hyperlinks ought be underlined as the web was meant to be, even if only dotted underline. Not going to win that battle, either.

I agree, but not for the same reason.
I think the search is fine, but Not separating IT discussions by category is a problem for two reasons:
Answering Questions
Since IT stuff is not grouped in categories, it makes it difficult for me to find any questions that I can help answer. I am not an expert in everything IT related. I have strengths and weaknesses. Certain topics I can be very helpful, others not so much. So if the title isnt descriptive enough to have Exchange or AD in it. I will probably not even read it. Especially if it has a ton of responses already. I thought the goal was to find and answer unanswered questions. They are very difficult to find when people chit chat on these threads and the threads that are unanswered just get pulled down to the bottom. Once they leave the first two pages what is the likelihood of anyone just randomly clicking on a poorly titled question to answer it? If they were in categories I could browse Exchange or whatever and purposely look for unanswered questions like I do in another community.Asking Questions or Lurking
Sometimes I like to lurk on a certain topic. Maybe, I am not familiar with it and I like to see how other people's questions are answered. It also helps me better understand that specific topic when I can browse see questions and answers related to just a specific topic.
Its easier to find an answer or similar answer when you can quickly see Topics related to an item. Instead of searching and praying that a keyword is in the topic or is even related to to the topic.Using the Search feature isn't enough
Search's aren't accurate when you want them to be. I just like to browse forums because search functions on forums generally suck. Maybe Mangolassi has a useful search. I dont know. The fact of the matter is that people have been trained their whole lives that search engines on forums suck. I know there are people like me that dont use the search feature in forums. Remember how many people avoided it on that other forum? Sure we dont someone from Somalia who posts something random once and never comes back, but I think the lack of categories will turn off alot of REAL users. -
The talk is to use tags, rather than groups. Groups are a disaster as we've seen in another forum. One of the benefits of coming along much later is learning from what others did. Groups are problems because nothing in IT falls into a neat group. Everything becomes a complex reclassification effort.
With tags you could say "windows, HyperV, virtualization, SAN, storage, Dell, Equalogic" all for one thread rather than having people confused as to which of those seven groups something fits into.

You can tag in this forum?

Not yet. But that is the plan. Hoping that the platform developers can add that soon.

We are at nearly 7,900 posts. We are only hours away from passing the most active, known site on this platform without having imported content from a former platform. So we are pretty high priority

Has it now been surpassed?
