This is just fun for those of us deeply entrenched in the Linux ecosystem. Linux will be 23 years old later this year. See how things advanced: http://www.linux-netbook.com/linux/timeline/

I think that this is an amazing tool for people like @mike-ralston and @joyfano who are new to Linux and quite a bit younger than many of us and may have a hard to putting it into an historical perspective. This helps us understand where the distros came into play, why KDE is considered so much older than Gnome, etc.

I started on Linux around 1997 with Caldera's 1.3 release of it (not listed in the chart, not that big of a distro.) I was using Linux at NTG by 2000, at OilNavigator by late 2000 and helped to get Linux into IBM in late 2000. I was teaching Linux internally at IBM and CTG by 2001. It is incredible to see how far back that is in the Linux ecosystem and how nascent it was then. And then to see the SCO lawsuit, which still seems current, being eleven years ago!
