How to Update HPE Gen 8 Server Firmware on Proxmox / Debian
-
I have a Gen 8 HPE server running Proxmox (Debian) and need to deploy firmware. Since the OS's supported are very old and not Debian or DEB based, is there a way to deploy this somehow?

What is "deploy firmware" in this case?
If you want to update bios, raid cards, network cards, ilo etc you can just boot into another OS, update and then reboot into your installed OS.
We do it remotely by mounting a virtual drive over ipmi/idrac/ilo. If you have physical access or remote hands you can do it with usb storage.
A lot of times you can boot into DOS or linux to run firmware updates. That's pretty easy to set up. Windows is harder since it needs to be installed but can be done with a USB hard drive (64GB+) that has a complete windows enviroment.

Specifically this one: https://support.hpe.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?swItemId=MTX_6d3a7434a68f4b0ab8d143fdb7
We have upgraded everything else with an bootable ISO but the SP doesn't include this fix.

Assuming you read the installation instructions. Did you attempt any of the methods offered?

Yes, the first option I can't get ./CP019826.scexe to run w/o errors
Offline - The links are broken
Third option requires the ISO, which I assume is part of step II.

Might help troubleshoot if you shared more details about this.

Maybe you could use the same ISO you mentioned above?
-
@scottalanmiller Do you recall the exact error?

I was able to find Gen 8.1 SP but it’s not Freetown download.

Didn’t work for me too.

@black3dynamite Yes, the 8.1 SPP is the main ISO that we used to update everything but the drive.

Just install one of the old supported OSes on another drive, reboot and run the firmware update. It's a self extracting executable.
With HP and Dell, it's their intention to support you by providing an additional layer of management on top of the actual manufacturers product. But you have to be in warranty to be able to leverage that support. If you intend to run equipment longer than the 5 year warranty, don't use Dell or HP or live without any firmware upgrades or support. If you use Dell or HP, replace hardware when it's out of warranty.
HP Gen8 servers are from 2012-2013 so 7-8 years old and not the best candidates for new installations.
