Sometimes Zimbra will get stuck with stale PID files for some reason and will be unable to clean them up or restart itself. Even a system reboot will do nothing. You can look at /var/log/zimbra.log and look for words like "stale" or "pid" to see error messages about this. Using zmcontrol to restart services will not help.

First, sometimes doing a series of zmcontrol stop and zmcontrol start will clear up the issue. (Remember to do this as the zimbra user, not as root.)

If you want to look for pid files manually. Zimbra stores them in /var/zimbra/log. Just look for files ending in .pid. If you have stopped Zimbra, and pid files remain, you can manually delete them rm /var/zimbra/log/*.pd and then try starting Zimbra again.

Is that a known issue and how often does this happen?

Known, yes. Often, no. We've run Zimbra for many years and never seen it happen. Searches on it show very little discussion, but it does seem to be hinted at. But not enough for anyone to have (as far as I can tell) have written up where to find the PIDs, how to clear them, or what to do. It's rare enough that people just say "check the logs."

I have only had this happened on the upgrades between versions and OS upgrade.

This happened to us while simply up and running. Middle of the day. Very odd.

Hmmm I just upgraded from 8.8.9 to 8.8.11 last week or two weeks ago.
