HP is going for the higher end Chromebook market with the new Chromebook x2 Tablet powered by an i7 processor, 12" QHD IPS screen and active stylus. 8GB of RAM and detachable keyboard make the x2 pretty flexible, too. All aluminum design makes the x2 a bit more robust physically than most Chromebooks.

      Looks to be about $600.

CPU and screen. Those are the big ones. And the Intel i7 uses a ton of power compared to a small ARM proc.

RAM does a little. 8GB over 4GB will use a small extra amount. But nothing compared to the CPU.

Do you really need that kind of horsepower in a Chromebook? I'm not knocking the amount of RAM... but an i7 is a bit overkill, isn't it? -- Unless you're running hefty Android apps or something.

Well in theory JavaScript based apps can need a lot of horsepower to perform well.

Maybe this type of device will encourage the development of heftier apps for chrome os... Video/audio stuff, graphics, etc. I'd run Reaper on a Chromebook like this to record multitrack audio... Assuming the audio hardware drivers existed.
