      Isn't Nest famous for being insecure?

      Maybe I'm not plugged in enough, but not that I was aware of.

      Maybe I am thinking of something else.

        Nope, its Nest. Doesn't release security patches to known issues.

            Well, forget Nest then. My memory fails again.

              When considering home IoT things - does it work without internet connectivity to the mothership?

              Yes --> investigate

              No --> dumpster fire, avoid

                Which kind of has me wondering how hard it would be to make an open source version of something like this.

                      I've got instructions on how to use a Raspberri Pi to do this already. The door sensor is a really simple thing to get working, and can be used for window opening as well (but not glass break.)

                      Using PIR sensors is also simple. https://circuitdigest.com/microcontroller-projects/raspberry-pi-iot-intruder-alert-system

                      You can even use smaller boards like Adafruit's Huzzah wifi or bluetooth boards for remote sensors.

                          I'm not convinced any of these features interest me outside of intelligent control of heating / cooling and hands free door operation. The last one would be very cool connected to an RFID reader so I can have my hands full and press my ass (wallet cheek) to it and the door pops open.

                          What's the draw with this stuff?

                            Raspberry Pi will do just fine.

                              I'm not so much considering the security stuff. Really don't care too much about it. But the heat/cool, lighting control, door control, and habit learning piece of it would be handy to have especially if I am doing something green field.

                                  Could start out with Home-assistant.io and develop an alarm system off of that.

                                      That's kind of how I remember it. Nothing specific, just not living up to Google's reputation and actually doing a lot of harm to them.

                                        I have their thermostat. So far, nobody has been monkeying around with my temperature settings, lol.

                                          The fact that Google hasn't fired the whole lot of them and continues to allow them to damage Google's and Alphabet's rep amazes me!!!

                                          i'm not sure there is anything they could do at this stage to get me to install, let along pay for Nest stuff.
                                          They are basically like Lenovo to me. Dead.

                                            I have yet to really see an IoT company I actually trust. The closest might be the Ring Video Doorbell.
