Migrating File Shares from Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2

I have an older 2012 VM (VMware) file server that has 2 additional virtual disks that are just for shared folders. I have another, newer 2012 R2 VM that I want to attach the virtual disks to and share everything from it. Is there a reason why I can't just disconnect the virtual disks from the old one and add them to the newer one and then just recreate the shares?
