Looking for Cost Effective and Open Source Solution with Overall Linux Environment
-
Hello,
as service provider I would like to say that a small businessmen not able to purchase Microsoft licensing like server OS, yearly CAL, client OS, office and Hardware for the same.
I really won't blame Microsoft because I think they worth it!!!
But it sucks to new startups businesses, as look in to open source Linux is an a option for cost effective and stable solution, we can integrate small network with it and for same I have done small projects. there is all Ubuntu clients, windows server (because I wasn't option). I'm little familiar with Ubuntu Desktop, Now I purely looking for server in Linux for small networks! -
So there are a lot of places you can save money. The minor one, but the one that people often talk a lot about, is moving to a Linux based desktop like Mint, Gecko, Korora, Ubuntu, Fedora, Solus, ElementaryOS and so forth. We have loads of Linux desktop users here (I'm writing to you from a Gecking Rolling Budgie desktop) and it is quite popular and functional. This community has done extensive looking into Linux on the desktop. And several Chromebook users, too, like @QuixoticJeremy

Something to keep in mind with new setups is the idea of the LANless network. Things like Active Directory come from another era and may not be necessary at all in the modern world. This can do a lot to change where there is cost and where you can lower the cost of new systems.

Around here the big recommendation is to look at Ubiquiti EdgeRouters for your firewall edge devices. You can't build your own devices of the same quality for the price.

Central authentication, like AD, LDAP and so forth, has its place. But rarely in the SMB with a greenfield install. Local users work just fine, and you can centrally manage local users, too. New management tools like Salt, Ansible, Puppet and Chef really change how you can and should approach managing your users, desktops and servers.

I've been thinking about this as well and simply haven't got around to making the thread.
The big question I had was how to manage user accounts and configuration settings for workstations. Looks like it's time for me to finally start learning about the aforementioned tools.

Did you miss the talk by @QuixoticJeremy at MangoCon 2017? This was his topic.

No. I was there, that's why I asked the question about whether or not you could manage workstations with the concepts behind Sodium :). I worded my post poorly. Basically, I'm saying I need to learn about those tools, now that I know they exist.

Did that video really jump 300 views SINCE I posted it above?

@scottalanmiller I just watched the LANless video. Good stuff. I am surprised that you gave that much praise to UTMs. Granted, this is a year ago.
