where you're coming from. However, in my experience, Google can have the data. I've never had a leak of any kind personally
You missed the whole point. The OP is talking about comparing the current progression to the Matrix. The Matrix controlled everything - sure people thought they had free will, but ultimately they didn't - they were jacked into a computer that controlled everything.
As Google learns more and more about us, they learn better how to manipulate us, and they'll be able to do it so subtlety that we won't even know that it's happening. Advertisers do that to us all time time.

But generally in ways that people should see. The fundamental issue is that lots of people like just being manipulated, so they opt in.

This is a physiological debate we can have another time

If you're worried about that kind of stuff, be sure to NEVER watch Black Mirror. It shows a plausible version of the near future where some, if not all, of those things have come true. The ways that technology is applied in that show is absolutely frightening, mostly because you can see how we may only be a handful of decades away from it.
My friend had me watch two episodes - the one with the personal assistant, and the one where everyone basically lived facebook, but a ranking system was in place and used to decide on what things you could and couldn't do/get, etc.
yep, pretty scary stuff.

Yeah but it's fact that the majority of the world is stupid, and I agree with @scottalanmiller that people like being manipulated and programmed. I do not claim to be immune to tactics like this, but I'm also pretty good about using them myself, and I've already had to go through a complete de-programming of my very being of everything I've learned since birth, so I've also got some resistance. However, I get what the OP is saying. That being said, we are a far cry from the world of the Matrix. And I've considered how once we have AI and robotics, how that will affect everything from civils rights to legislation in every aspect. It's going to be messy. Thankfully, we're not there yet. We've got enough to deal with right now.

I'm going to quote this in the IT quotes thread lol

It's hard to think for yourself. Letting others tell you what to do is easy and soothing. You do not need to think, just nod and follow along. No more decisions to make or things to choose.

Just saw a Popular Technology~Science~Mechanics magazine in Toys R Us about the new artificial intelligence. Glanced at it real quick and one article was titled on how to build new machines that won't kill us. Wish I could have gotten it but more focused on Christmas shopping right now.
