You have a friggin' desktop and you can't put icons on it? WTF? Why can't I put web app shortcuts on the desktop? We have icons on every other GUI solution out there (android, iphone, windows phones, Windows PC, Macs, Cinnamon, etc).
I'm now trying to find a printing solution for this device. Sadly, the Chromebook is in NYC, and I'm in Nebraska.
Can you remote control into a Chromebook? Not to mention getting the printer on WiFi will be a minor challenge for this user.

Seriously, who actually minimizes everything or does a hide all, going to their desktop, instead of just opens Explorer and uses some other directory? I mean I do, but there is no easier way...
What's even better is just making a shortcut for a certain directory on your taskbar...

As for hiding? I personally don't use the desktop for internet shortcuts, I use the desktop for a dumping ground of temporary files. Which brings us to things like Snip and GreenShot - other than just a full on screen shot, is there a way to grab a specific area of the screen for documentation creation purposes?
yes now I know I'm nit picking, but I use this function almost daily for dropping into documentation or dropping images into ML.
But I'm a power user, so I'm fine with Windows. I know how to take care of it, I want to upgrade to Windows 10 (OK did it in what Nov, Dec of 2014). So I need/want different things.
But my 72 yr old Doc wants something close to what he's been using for 20 years or more since Win9x or even Win 3.x icons on the desktop. He has a shortcut to google, to AOL (don't ask), his stocks page, etc. He prefers it (and so does the majority of my staff) to have the shortcut on the desktop instead of clicking the favorite button. I'm past caring why they won't change, I just give them what they want.

Remote control a Chromebook? Not yet. I tried and tried. Chromecast for Chrome is FROM Chrome. But now with Android support, you'll be able to most likely.
Printing solution... That is also a tough one because printers are for users, not computers. So you have to add the printer(s) to each user's Gmail account. I've stopped looking for easier methods as I am no longer in GAFE.

Oh, I don't work in Education. So I'm assuming that GAFB is Google Apps for Business then? And since this device is for a home user, that's not much help either.

And also Google Apps for Business. It takes the Google Enterprise Console and lets you manage Chrome & Android devices, while also pushing policy. It has other functionality like MX records, etc.
Think of a crappier version of Active Directory, Group Policy, etc, all rolled into one. I think admins still can't re-name computers, so you identify computers based on their MAC address, which is terrible. Can't put in building/room IDs, etc.

What you'd have to do is sign into their Google account from any device (doesn't have to be the Chromebook), then add the printer (if it can be added... some really old printers can't be added). Then... let me find the other steps so I'm not blowing smoke.

@Dashrender So it's all based on the USB connection or LAN... In theory, you should be able to add it to their account, then ship them the printer, because their account will be looking for the information on that printer. If not, you could walk them through how to do it in like 2 mins. It's made so easy that older folk have an easy time with it. Even easier if you know what name to tell them.

@Dashrender Also, one thing my brother-in-law's father liked (I set him up with a Chromebox), is that he can get on another computer, sign into Gmail, and print off stuff to his printer at home, because it's connected at home. So then when whoever is at his house and coming into town, they can bring his stuff with him if he isn't around a printer at the time and someone is going to be coming from his house.
Keep in mind... this is a man that uses the F word in every sentence with technology because he doesn't understand a lick of it.

While I can see the novelty of the remote printing, I don't see the real use of it. But then again, you're talking to a guy who has a printer at home but can't tell you the last time he printed, probably 5 months ago.

If you're setting up both devices, should work fine. If you know the SSID (you already said you don't, but if you can get that info), you could get everything connected, then make the changes on both devices to have the SSID/password added and they'd really have a plug and play.
Otherwise, you could do the cloud print stuff (in theory, should be plug and play...), all they'd have to do is setup both things on the wireless network.

I even argue with businesses that require me to fax something, or print it out and mail it in. "It's more secure"... don't tell me those lies! I'd rather print to PDF and email it to you.
