Ah, sorry, bad assumption on my part.

No worries - I work for one of those companies that falls outside what's probably considered the "norm" - I've been here for over 5 years so I'm pretty used to it now 😄

Generally with RAID 10 you don't do hot spares at all. They are costly and do extremely little. More likely you'd want 12 drives and one cold spare.

Thanks for the info : )

@shuey said in Advice on building "storage servers" with two DL380 G7 servers:

      The CDW rep said:

"Is it apple to apples or did xbyte use third party memory and drives? We are dell's largest partner so it should not be a large difference if truly apples to apples."

CDW might be the largest, but they aren't known for passing along good pricing, being very honest and they only deal in new, not refurb. So it is expected that their prices will be way higher.

xByte will use non-Dell parts, but keeps them under warranty. So it remains apples to apples. CDW is just panicking because they want the sale.

      @Shuey said in Free SharePoint?:

@Carnival-Boy Cool, I'll look into that.

If I was going to try a P2V of this server, what would be the best way to go about it?

I could consider a cold clone (the only disc I have available to try this is the VMware cold clone 3.0.3 disc; not sure if that will work or not) Another option I was considering is installing VMware Standalone Converter, then booting into DSRM mode and performing the P2V. Once the server was successfully converted, I'd shutdown the existing server, fire up the virtual, and make sure the IP was the same.

Thoughts on these options, or other possibilities?

The best case scenario is that the P2V jacks AD totally and forces a total rebuild of the environment that allows you to demonstrate to the owners that bad-IT is just another term for "wasting money" and that would give you a chance to start fresh.

@aaronstuder Hey Aaron - yep, I stated in my previous post that it was strictly for testing purposes (to determine if Macrium was going to work for me or not). And as Dustin stated, I ended up going with FOG anyway.

With all that said, you're load is extremely small, but I would still split up as per best practice and future proofing, and dish out ram and vcpus appropriately for your needs.

I would never waste the time configuring something so tiny like that. It probably does not even have full recovery mode enabled anyway.

@scottalanmiller said in Ideas for how to use new, free gear from HPE?:

      So the good options are....

If you want high availability from your storage, which doesn't make a lot of sense since you have only one blade chassis, so no failover should it have any issue, you would likely get an HA SAN which would either be something like a 3PAR or something like a dual Proliant Starwind cluster. @KOOLER

If you don't want high availability, but are just going to add reasonable low cost storage to make the blades have some place to store VMs, then a single Proliant based SAM-SD running CentOS or FreeBSD is perfect.

Easy! I'm pushing really hard to release now pre-built ESXi, KVM and Xen Virtual Machine based appliances to get this done free of charge and with as small traction as possible!

That's awesome. Can't wait to see that in action.

While those guys all had a point,

@scottalanmiller said in Great site to track OpenFire releases!:

It's about tracking known bugs. No software is bug free, but there are known show stoppers or critical bugs that are being worked on and there is the lull when people haven't found things broken "yet".

This was the purpose of your post.

Honestly I instantly said the same as the others above, there's no such thing as perfect code, but your OP about the tracker definitely nice to be aware of.

@IRJ said in Migrate and/or replace old cert server?:

I figured somebody would have yelled at you for running anything else on a DC already in 6 pages of replies.

I would build a new 2012 R2 DC, then transfer all roles then demote your old DC. I would just keep sharepoint on the old DC and call it a day.

We already have 5 other DC's. This last DC that I wanted to demote and remove cert services from is the last DC left in the original forest/domain that the admin before me built. I'm pretty much going to have to spend the next several weeks learning how to setup Sharepoint and migrate our existing server/data to a new member server. And trust me, I know it's stupid to run all that stuff on a DC, but I didn't set it up :-S

      Sorry, I didn't read everything 😞
