      Road trip!

Exactly 🙂 It'll give me some time to figure out all of the tech... Just took delivery on a 2019 Mazda 3 Sport GS 6MT yesterday 🙂

This is 100% likely. Users error is almost always the problem.

Quick fix is to remount the folder to an unused drive letter closer to the target.... so c:\stupid\long\folder\path\file1.txt becomes x:\file1.txt

      subst works great for this

In my experience ATI / AMD isn't any better. I've got an older HP Probook with ATI/Intel switchable graphics that was removed from support in the proprietary drivers a couple of years back. 😞

I though the ATI/AMD GPUs had decent open source drivers?

Might the case in general, but in my specific case the manual control / switching has been depreciated in the closed source and was never cleanly implemented in the opensource ones that I've seen. But to be perfectly honest I haven't put a whole lot of time into seeing if I can get it to work. The guides I've skimmed all seem to reference scripts and rebooting the x server... I'm not using that machine for anything that needs that level of tweaking so it's nothing more than an example of discontinued hardware support....

Our go-to solution for VSS problems is to set up a dedicated snapshot volume. Otherwise we were getting timeouts and M$ does ugly things that don't make sense when VSS doesn't work properly.

If using Ubuntu, you should use 18.04 LTS. Nearly everything in Ubuntu is tested LTS.
I was surprised how much shit isnt supported / test on 19.04 vs 18.0

I feel the opposite (and was told the opposite by Canonical.) All their testing and support goes to the current, not the LTS, releases. Yes, third parties oddly tend to test with outdated stuff more, but it's not the approach that Ubuntu themselves recommend. And while it may get more testing, the current gets more updates, which especially in stuff like this I think outweighs testing.

I hear where you're coming from and see the logic for systems that are only using stuff from canonical's own repos, but my experience has been that all of the 3rd party stuff seems (seemed? it's been a while since I've done much with 3rd party apps) to be tested and optimized for the LTS stream.

IIRC pisignage is what we're using to display social committee stuff in a couple of locations around the office.

There's also https://screenhub.com/ which we've looked at and seems pretty cool.

Plant-based diet can fight climate change - UN

Switching to a plant-based diet can help fight climate change, UN experts have said.
A major report on land use and climate change says the West's high consumption of meat and dairy produce is fuelling global warming.
But scientists and officials stopped short of explicitly calling on everyone to become vegan or vegetarian.
They said that more people could be fed using less land if individuals cut down on eating meat.
The document, prepared by 107 scientists for the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says that if land is used more effectively, it can store more of the carbon emitted by humans.

Interesting - this is the second time I've seen/heard something like this. I have a friend who became a vegetarian only because of this reasoning - not that he doesn't believe in eating meat.. but because of the environmental impact of raising meat for consumption.

It is all about the cow farts

@Pete-S If I'm not mistaken, what you've described is expected behaviour for a typically configured switchport and NIC.... If a NIC were configured in promiscuous mode on a hub (ick) I would expect it to see all traffic on the hub... not sure if this is along the lines of what you're looking for but it's the only gotcha I can think of based on your query... mind you the 3yo woke me up to watch Paw Patrol at some ungodly hour this morning so I might not be the sharpest at the moment

If this is counter in a restaurant, I'd bet good money that it's covered by bags or napkins or some kind of advertisement. Our POS systems use separate power bricks and the are constantly covered up and they cook nicely.

Lol I've seen this happen as well.
But this is the Server that's having the issues.

<air quotes>Server</air quotes> in this case is running W10 right? So likely just a PC in the manager's office that could equally be covered in stuff or otherwise be suffocating / overheating.

7zip is multi-threaded. Sooooooo much faster to compress/decompress than standard zip files in Windows.

As already said above, WinRAR (.rar files) is paid software. 7zip is FOSS.

      and it's cross platform

And it'll right-click > extract just about anything, including exe 🙂 Makes extracting Dell iDRAC firmware blobs sooo much easier

You should be OK with a laptop for these speeds.

A laptop, yes. That's not the point. The issue is something with this particular setup, laptop or whatever, can't get the speeds so testing with it doesn't tell him anything useful.

I've run into issues specifically for laptops where I couldn't get decent speeds, something either with the HW specifically or power-management / network stack wouldn't allow me to get the same speeds as a server / workstation connected to the exact same port / equipment. Regardless, you're correct that this laptop seems to have issues.

Is the package 100MB up and down? Is it a full 100 or a "burstable" setup (not sure how common this one is, but at a former gig we had a line that was provisioned at one speed but would allow temporary surges to another tier before automatically throttling back to the base rate.)

      using iperf3

@notverypunny said in Have computers gotten boring, or is it just me?:

So, all kidding aside (about me becoming the boring thing) is there something that I'm overlooking or missing out on or have computers and OSs in general gotten really boring over the last few years? I used to recall getting interested in new features, a new distribution or a DE's latest release not so many years ago. Now it seems that things are more or less the same across the board... a boring game of IT theme and variation. Anyone else seeing the same thing(s) out there?

It's your age (as in experience). And the fact that the technology is becoming relatively mature.
It's natural to not feel enthusiasm when you see something similar for the 15th or 30th time.

If some completely new mind-boggling technology showed up, you'd probably feel like a kid again!

He should go play in the clouds 😉

Ouff, cloud..... being forced to play there but not exactly enthusiastic about the whole idea.... damn I'm starting to sound (and feel) like an old curmudgeon 😛

    • XenServer Supplemental Packs

Before I jump down the rabbit hole on my own, has anyone on here tried / had any success building xenserver supplemental packs? (@olivier maybe?) I'd like to be able to take the fusioninventory agent rpms here as well as any dependencies and build a supplemental pack that I can deploy on our xenserver hosts.

Does this see feasible? Citrix seems to have some info on creating supplemental packs that's mostly aimed at driver support but it looks like features / extensions are possible too.

Alternatively, if someone has already built such a thing and is willing to share.....
