Thanks to all who came. I still say @scottalanmiller should give a talk about open source projects, the various ways they receive funding, and why that likely makes them more feature rich than monetized offerings. That would be a really good one.

The book that we discussed was: The Cathedral and the Bazaar

Thanks - I'll add that to the reading list. I'm sad it isn't on Audible. That seems to be my consumption method of choice these days.

    • DFW SpiceCorps Meeting 5/7/2019

If you're in the DFW area as a resident or someone in town just for MangoCon, come join the DFW SpiceCorps for some professional networking. RSVP for the meeting here.

      DATE & TIME
      Tuesday, May, 07
      6:30pm - 9:00pm CDT

      LOCATION
      Taco Diner
      5904 N MacArthur Blvd
      Irving, TX 75039
      United States

      Meeting Details

Nothing makes the beginning of May more exciting than a chance to get together with technical peers to talk shop! Since the last meeting at this venue was a success, we're going to once again be at Taco Diner in the Las Colinas area. Whether you're hungry for food or for professional networking, come hang with us. There's no specific topic on tap. Take time to meet someone new.

We will be in the back room of the restaurant. Give them my name (Nick Korte) when you arrive, and please RSVP if you plan to attend. There should be plenty of room for all who want to come.

***Since this is an unsponsored meetup, each attendee is responsible for his / her food and beverage bill.

    • Advocacy Programs for the Tech Newbie?

This is my version of a community poll for an upcoming Nerd Journey episode.

Do you see participating in advocacy programs as valuable? Why or why not?

If you could recommend a tech community newbie join one or more vendor advocacy programs to boost his / her career, what would they be? What's the right number to join, and why?

Outside of the larger tech vendors, what advocacy programs exist that you think others may not know about?

In my last post, we explored Building Custom Search Engines for VMware content in Google Chrome. If we can be VMware documentation search ninjas in Chrome, I thought it would be fun to explore the same idea using Firefox. Maybe the process will be similar. We’re about to learn the answer.

    • VMworld Call for Proposals Ends Soon (4/16)

I should have posted about this earlier, but if you’re someone who wants a big stage to give a helpful talk, VMworld can be that stage. They are encouraging sessions on professional development in addition to other topics. The submission process is a big rigorous, but if selected you get a free ticket to the conference (but not travel and airfare. Details can be found here:
      https://www.vmworld.com/en/us/learning/sessions.htm

I will also add the vBrownBag sessions will probably open in the next several weeks too.

@scottalanmiller - have you ever thought about throwing your hat in the ring for this?

I could see that as pretty useful if I was deploying a Pi-Home for a bunch of different family members or even for several remote offices.

I do that already, and just deploy a single Pi-Hole. If you want lots of Pi-Holes for some reason, I think there are already seemingly way better ways to do that. But mostly, I'd wonder why'd you'd want more than one or two. But certainly there could be reasons. But mostly that would be if you were running some kind of Pi-Hole support company which would be super weird and I think way better suited with something much more enterprise.

I was saying I had considered setting up a Pi-hole at each of our extended family's homes. Sorry if that was not clear earlier. But I see what you mean about other options to manage them.

    • RE: Centralized Management for Pi-Hole - balena-pihole

Unless I read that blog completely wrong, provisioning in conjunction with balenaCloud allows you to update multiple Pi-Holes from a central location and gives you the ability to access the admin interface of each Pi-Hole from balenaCloud. I could see that as pretty useful if I was deploying a Pi-Home for a bunch of different family members or even for several remote offices.

    • Centralized Management for Pi-Hole - balena-pihole

I finally took the plunge and bought myself a Raspberry Pi 3B+. As I was imaging the SD card with the latest Raspbian Stretch using Etcher, I found this article about a project called balena cloud (yeah, yeah, I clicked an ad during the flash of my SD card). It actually looks pretty slick and gives you some insight into your Pi-hole fleet (assuming you want that) and allows management and updates.

Has anyone used this project? If so, did you like it?
