@iroal You need to publish step-by-step how you managed to pull this off. Also list your Server model/spec as well for comparison. This will benefit many people.

RE: How much harder is MCSA vs MCSE Server
@scottalanmiller said:
Defining what you want the certs to do for you is critical. Windows and Cisco roles don't normally mix and neither is that common in a datacenter. Cisco would be more common, but networking people are normally in an office, not the datacenter. Normally a datacenter is people who do rack and stacks, swap drives, run cables, etc.

Honest answer would be the job that pay the bills. I like the task I am doing right now as system admin, but dealing with management who does not understand half the infrastructure is frustrating. I saved the company couple thousand of dollars by avoided IT consult performing the server upgrade (thanks to you who recommend me to ignore their opinion) but no thankyou from management. When I made a mistake I am in hot water. It is just not fun dealing with management who does not understand what is going and thought they know everything.

So after presenting my boss with the reasons your guys provided.. he said he will try to push for PDQ inventory Pro for 1 year He still have to bring it up to his boss before final approval.

RE: screen saver timeouts with password required after 20 minutes.
20 minutes is too long. I could walk away, take a dump, play one level of Angry Bird, buy a drink at vending machine, and come back within 20 minutes.

Hyper-V messed up. Lost Virtual Machine. :"(
This is totally and 100% user error. I did what I should not have done, delete the virtual machine file w/o making backup. Please don't ask why...
Right now All I have left is .vhdx and AVHDX files. I lost my snapshots and other xml files. What should I do? Can I restore a virtual machine with only VHDX and AVHDX files?
Suck for this to happen on Friday.

Windows Server 2012 R2 File Auditing...thingy
How can I set up audit on a share drive? Just to see what have been delete, move, edit, create, etc. I am tasked to create a daily report on one specific folder where they suspect someone is messing with it.
EDIT: and by who/time/date -
Convert Hyper-V Gen1 to Gen2... is it easy?
We have some virtual machines that were created using Gen1. We want to get those VM to Gen2 instead. The reason behind the change is IDE/SCSI resizing VM disk space. I read Microsoft's technet and learn that Gen1 utilize IDE, and is not capable of Shrinking the disk space. Only SCSI offer shrinking mechanism.
I found some powershell commands to do just that... but there are reports of errors as well. So I want to know if there is an easy way to convert Gen1 to Gen2... or better yet is there a way for Gen1 to shrink its size?
Ultimately we can create new VM and reconfigure everything from scratch (File Server).. only going to take us half a day if there is no easy way for conversion.

Sharepoint-like application that doesn't cost a huge fortune?
We are looking for something similar to Sharepoint,
Our goal is an on-premise solution which can act as sharepoint/dropbox (where files show revision) and the ability for us to assign moderator to each group/department. We prefer something that might cost less while deliver certain degree of functionality (such as drag&drop for uploading files, revision, moderator/admin per Folder/group, etc) I know this is quite vague, but if you know any program that does this -
RE: Sharepoint-like application that doesn't cost a huge fortune?
Ignore this thread. I think I was misinformed. I will drive into Sharepoint Foundation and see what's the issue with it. Thanks all

need program deployment (GPO) suggestion... Not how to but more of a best practice.
The application in question is Adobe Acrobat/Reader 11.
We have limited license of Adobe Acrobat XI so we can only deploy to xx amount of users. I have a list of users who will get it each month. Yes, each month. Reason is we as a recruiting agency have a team-based gameplan. Each month different person will be appoint a team-lead for those team to train leadership, which is awesome IMO. Problem is only team leads will get Adobe Acrobat and the rest will get Reader. Our agents use Acrobat for compiling PDFs, rotate, watermark, etc. Everyone has either Adobe PDF printer or PDFcreator to convert office/gdoc to PDF. Hope this explain WHY
We do not have any plan to purchase more licenses, nor the will to do so. Right now every month I have to wander around and uninstall/install Acrobat on various machines... about 10 PC (5 team) per month. 5 uninstall + 5 install.
I want to implement a solution through GPO (we don't have PDQ Pros so that's out of the question) where I only need to assign member to each profile to trigger installation of Adobe Acrobat, and uninstall when it falls out of scope. However, I heard that Adobe is picky and can corrupt various registry if use GPO and central deployment folder(thingy).
Suggestion? http://irowiki.org/cl/images/8/82/Que.gif

The story of CryptoLocker... Just happened an hour ago... Thoughts?
Here's a quick back story: A user reported that McAfee endpoint alert of a Trojan detected. We inspect her machine and confirm it is CryptoLocker. We quickly unhook her machine from our network immediately. We were not sure why or how did CryptoLocker gain access to this user's machine. She has been a great user and very cautious one.
Later we booted her machine with Network cable unhooked to look at her emails and website history...nothing out of ordinary detected. The machine she used is a hand-me-down machine with at most 2 other users before her. Because it is an older machine, it does not have any backup solution implement...all her local files is lost.
Upon further inspection, we found that GPO for preventing CryptoLocker is Denied. We were confused, but quickly conclude it to GPO replication failure we experienced 2-3 days earlier. Among Denied GPOs, beside CryptoLocker, are known GPOs that failed to replicate.
Luckily for us we have backup solution on server side. We boot every active users out and shutdown Shared Path to prevent further contamination. All files were restored using its backup from noon. Overall, everything is resolved.
Lesson of the day: BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!!!
Does anyone knows how does CryptoLocker works? How does it spread to network drives? Does it replicate its Trojan as it crypt files? Thoughts? -
Voice/Greeting recording for generic holidays and other messages...Where do you get them from?
Our phone system has a custom greeting if we do not want to use robot tone for greeting... I have 2 options. First is to get a voice talent person within the company to record the recording. Second is to get from somewhere else (hired voice talent or download from somewhere). I want to know if anyone know any website that has variety of greeting recording available for download?
Some greetings I can think of are Generic Holiday.. We are closed due to whatever... Memorial, Independence, Thanks Giving, Christmas, New Year, etc.

Look for the learning Linux series of posts @scottalanmiller did, they're great!
I saw couple Linux series posts from SAM. I tried to follow, but because I do not use it on a daily basis it doesn't rub well on me.
Did you post questions about what was missing or confusing?
In addition to the above.
- Use an SSH client to connect after the bare VM is running, stop using Hyper-V console. You cannot easily copy/paste.
- Follow my guide as linked previously.
- Copy and paste commands, do not retype them.
As I mentioned I am fairly new to these things. I have zero (except basic online java course) experience in programming. You could say I only know enough to get through my day.
Since the past 24 hours I know and understand the purpose of yum and wget through multiple attempts of installing ownCloud. It will works eventually. Also, I do enjoy dirty-ing my hands. I learned a lot, and not going to stop until I got ownCloud working the way I want it...or after completing SAM's linux series.

Needless to say but stay clear of Comics Sans!! I've seen some resume that used Comics Sans and it went from "possible candidate" to "denied" bin within seconds.ps. I hang out with my HR manager often. She's a cool HR lady.

Check out the xByte Add on your right --->

Depends on who you want to go with. I backed Dafyre to cehck xByte.
We got our server through Dell rep, but when we heard of xByte it was too late as we already received the server. xByte would have saved us 10-15%. That was about $2,000 saving. or 10 SSD -
Dell R430 with PERC H730 support SSD? (Samsung 850 Pro)
Any one knows if Dell R430 w/ PERC H730 support Samsung 850 Pro?
I want to run a VM for myself but I do not want to use the HDD that came with it. I heard that some PERC does not support TRIM and using SSD w/o TRIM is a bad idea. I also read from somewhere else that 850 PRO can sustain couple of years on card w/o TRIM. Any idea? -
Follow up on Hyper-V High availability? or only VMware
This is a follow up on Hyper-V High availability? or only VMware
For those that do not want to read the whole thread, I'll summarize it here:
- Our servers are old
- We need more reliable server for our production team
- Our IT consultant suggest us to go with 2 server 1 SAN w/ WMware Essential Plus for high-availability (which was deemed IPOD)
- I started off at the wrong foot and was too deep in the rabbit hole so this thread is to ask for advice and disregard everything our IT consultant has suggested
We have 2 physical server. Both are File servers. My boss want to have them seperate for reasons. I will call it FS-A and FS-B for simplicity. FS-A contain public files and those that can be access by anyone in production team. FS-B is confidential files and only accessible by Managers and higher ups. Also, FS-B contain accounting application.
Because our servers are old, we need to replace them soon. I made a mistake and order the 2 servers without proper consultant. The specs are:
- 1 E-5 2620-v3
- 32GB ECC memory
- 4x 1TB SATA HDD (RAID 10 = 2TB usable) (Each server has about 800GB - 1TB of files)
I will take in any suggestions. So far I agree to Starwind VSAN with Hyper-V cluster. The IOPs on these 2 servers are about 120-150 IOPS.
Thanks!

2 questions: Starwind + Hyper-V core possible? Starwind vSAN 1 NIC + 1 onboard?
So the question is in the title.. Can I use Starwind with Hyper-v 2012 R2 core? The core edition is command line base and doesn't has any GUI so I don't know how to manage Starwind nor install it. What's your thought on this?
Also, does starwind required 2 NIC or 1 NIC and 1 onboard will do?

Also, the video creator mentioned that the live migration is not actual real time as the VM needs to spin up and may takes from seconds to minutes. Is it true?
Yes, there is a hiccup as the workload is brought back online on the second machine.
Thanks SAM. I'll take minutes over hours any day.
