    • ZoHo Creator - Anyone Using It?

My company is really pushing for a database/reporting option that will replace two messy but company critical spreadsheets. I'm the SOLO IT Director/Person but they decided to go around me to a building engineer who has C# experience to see if he can program it. But between his normal duties and the time needed to do this, he passed. But he lead them to Zoho Creator so they are turning it back over to me, despite some of my concerns with it. But it is what it is and I have to move forward with it (and a whole other discussion). My concerns about ZoHo were the cost per user for what little they will use it for and Zoho's slow support and forum moderation. I tried to look for options within our Office 365 Enterprise E1 that would be as easy as ZoHo but I couldn't.

The main spreadsheet has always shown the deliveries with the customer in the rows and details about the deliveries like colors, date, miles, dollars, etc in the columns. The current sheet separates the weeks of deliveries by a simple black line and at the bottom of the sheet is the year to date dollar totals to show the owner of the company. This is pretty much the sheet he drives off of to know how sales are. The other sheet shows what is yet needed to deliver a job. All the data I've so far imported into the database on Zoho will let me create these two reports and other options.

The problem I have is I can't get find documentation on how to do things in ZoHo to make it report like the spreadsheet. Sure, a lot of it is simple but finding documentation in ZoHo or getting a response in email or forums is difficult.

I'd love some opinions on ZoHo but I don't think my company will change from this now. So, overall, I'm looking on how to get more detailed reporting as described above and to make it print and look neat.

      Thanks...

    • Windows 10 (Store) Remote Desktop App Errors

Has anyone seen this error recently?

      0_1520625891187_remoteDesktopError01.jpg

I can't seem to resolve it. The user's passwords are fine both in AD and saved in their remote desktop applications.

They are connecting to VPN just fine from their home back to the office but remote desktop will fail with this error.

If they revert back into the older, built in RDP, so far, it works. They prefer this "store" version of RD

      Any suggestions?

    • New Server Migration Adventure

Several years ago on ML, I documented my adventure of a server upgrade and Windows Server migration. Primarily, the challenge was upgrading the AD server from Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2012 R2. That was a challenge but ML was instrumental in helping me find the best documentation and methods to do so. I'll never forget the night that I pressed enter on the AD migration script but it went 100% perfect.

Since then, via Hyper-V, we run our AD, File Server and Backup Server (Veeam and BackupAssist) on that one physical server. I also re-purposed and purchased licenses for the old server and it also runs 3 virtual servers. All 6 virtuals are 2012 R2.

So today, our new Dell VRTX arrived and it will replace both of those physical servers. It is a two node system based upon PowerEdge M630 with plenty of storage and a ton of drive bays left for future use.

The purchase comes with Remote Consulting Service so I'll use that as much as I can, especially in configuring the nodes.

I also believe that migrating the VM's won't be so bad though I am looking for best practices on that.

We purchased the appropriate licenses for Server 2016 with Software Assurance. As mentioned, everything is currently on 2012 R2.

The easiest plan would be to migrate the VM's over as they are and upgrade them to 2016 later (we have the license to do so.) But I'm thinking it might be best to go ahead and knock that out now...

So looking for some opinions, suggestion and best practices...thanks...

    • Network Issues on Copiers and HP Enterprise Printers

About 12:20PM today, all of our Enterprise Level HP Printers went down with Security Error 33.05.13. They have not recovered.

      alt text

I've researched that error and here's the troubleshooting so far:

Tried firmware reload via USB drive. Boots to same error
Booting printers disconnected from network results in a complete boot. If I plug them back in, they lock up and if you reboot while connected, same security alert.
This is only affecting Enterprise Level Printers and not standard laserjet and deskjets. I assume it is due to added security in those class of printers.

And as I type this, our Toshiba Copiers are very sluggish when using the on device buttons. The software on them is very slow.

      Other observations:

My PC lost internet only around 12:20PM and I did a release/renew and about that time, the HP's when down. I don't think this is the cause but it is interesting.
No other adverse effects on workstations or servers.
I've worked with a local HP rep who came here and HP on the phone and they don't know what the cause is.

I am about to head to an even for a few hours but will be back here at 7PM central time to continue to troubleshoot. The first thing I may do is reboot all my servers, which includes Domain Controller, DHCP and DNS.

But I am worried we have had some kind of attack and with the focus on cyber-security, management wants to be reassured.

I have WireShark but I admit I am not good at reading the results.

I'll update more in a few hours.

    • New ISP Issues at CEO's Home

I'm not only the IT Director for my company but for the CEO's home and it seems like when it comes to his home, I run into quirks all the time.

He lives in a huge home in a rural area:

      lodge_network_03.jpg

The "X" on the far left is what we call the "boot room" and that is where the internet comes into the home. The other X's are where the other two Ubiquity switches are.

He best option the last year or so has been a Pepwave modem with a Verizon signal from a cell tower. We simply plugged in this Pepwave Modem, set a few things on it and plugged it into the switch in the boot room and the internet would propagate down to the other switches and WiFi devices, all Ubiquity devices. 3 Months ago, that tower went down and Verizon has no ETA so broadband has been horrible, 1meg or less.

So, the CEO tasked me with finding a new solution. I hesitated on Satellite Internet but weighing the only options we had, I decided ViaSat was the best option.

Well, the modem that came with Viasat has no granular control over the network, meaning no way to set or change IP, DNS, DHCP, etc, as the Pepwave had. So simply plugging in the ViaSat modem to the network resulted in no internet. I plugged my laptop directly to the ViaSat modem, and this is what it pulls (with much of the info masked for security:

         Description . . . . . . . . . . . : ASIX AX88178 USB2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
         Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : ****
         DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
         Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
         Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : ****
         IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 67.**.**.***(Preferred)

         Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 5, 2019 3:19:37 PM
         Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Thursday, September 5, 2019 4:19:36 PM
         Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 67.**.***.*
         DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.**.**.***
         DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : ***
         DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : ***
         DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 99.196.**.**
                                             99.197.**.**
         NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

      It pulls a 67. IP, from a 10. DHCP and DNS is a 99.

Our local network on the current modem is on a 192.168.1.1/24 range.

The ViaSat's default IP is 192.168.100.1

I did have someone say I could link up the Pepwave to handle LAN to WAN routing and DHCP like this:

      viaSatt_01.png

I humbly will admit not sure how to get started on this...the Pepwave does offer a lot of customization but not sure where to start since the ViaSat pulls all kinds of IP's outside the 192.168.1.1/24 range...

      Any suggestions?

@garak0410 You want the internet connection on eth0 or eth1, those are the two ports that get the ASIC accelerated routing. eth2, eth3 and eth4 are all on a switch that has to use the CPU for routing functions, really slows things down.

Interesting- I didn't know that. Cool.

      Because heโ€™s wrong.

Has that changed, or did I just get bad information again?

      It has never changed.

When I go back out there, I'll make these changes...right now, the struggle is getting the port forwarding correct for the Milestone cameras...I matched what was on the previous modem/router and it doesn't seem to be working as the mobile Milestone app isn't working still due to the port forwarding.

Are you certain that it is the port forwarding causing the issue? Maybe it is something else.

I got it fixed...needed a little more DNS info in the router...it is all working now...

But now reality hits...Satellite Internet isn't all that great...it for sure does have the "Click, wait, bam" result and uploads do struggle...he will let me know how it goes tonight...

Like many have mentioned before, it may be time for him to use his clout and money to see what it will take to get fiber out there...or we may look at point to point...

Newer ones get pretty good. Older ones tend to be terribly slow.

The currently available ones are still rather slow. 600-800ms, which is better than the original 3000+. The ones with good latency aren't available yet ๐Ÿ˜ž

@garak0410 Try going into each AP and disabling all un-needed features. We've had a lot of trouble in the past year with meshing getting turned on after a controller update. Causes the APs to attempt routing between each other instead of the wire they're plugged into. Creates a network loop that packets never escape from.

All of them had MESHING enabled...I've turned it off on the AP's and waiting to see what happens...one of the PC's I have there also has a wireless adapter so I am able to test with that but so far, it connects to WiFi network but NO INTERNET.
