      That's really cool.

I just hate there's the taint of their backdoor nonsense from a while ago 😞

Did you just casual drop "backdoor" and "taint" in the same technical sentence?

    • YouTube Month in Review: October 2019

Trying to keep the pace of one video per week, this month has been all Hyper-V. My goal with these videos is that a person with zero experience with Hyper-V could follow them and end with a functional environment using Hyper-V.

Getting Started with Hyper-V Virtualization Part 2: Installing Hyper-V
Getting Started with Hyper-V Virtualization Part 3: Hyper-V Host and Client Config - Non-Domain
Getting Started with Hyper-V Virtualization Part 3: Hyper-V Host and Client Config - Domain
Getting Started with Hyper-V Virtualization Part 4: Final Config and Create VMs

Enjoy! If you know folks who might find these helpful, be sure to share the links! 😄

    • YouTube Month in Review: January 2021

I finished the RHCSA practice session project this month and started on a few other things.

Next, I'll start putting content on Odysee (which will mirror YouTube and have content availably via LBRY) as well as Rumble, so maybe it'll reach folks who choose YouTube alternatives. I don't intend to produce unique content for each platform, as I simply don't have the time to do that.

    • Question of the morning

User: I hit something while doing emails, and now my signature and any responses are super tiny. Any idea what I did and how to change it back?

Me: (in my head) In a word, "no."

Me: (typed into Slack) Perhaps you messed with the zoom in the lower right corner.

    • Billing Hour Segments

For those who do hourly contract work, how do you typically segments your billable hours? In tenths? Quarters?

In the saxophone studio world, and hour lesson is an hour lesson. There are no situations which require time segments. In the IT world, time to complete tasks is always variable.

      Me: Here's what I found.

User: This looks like what I need. Thank you!

Me (internally): So I've just set a precedence that I can find anything using absolute minimal amount of information. /sigh

    • Liability Insurance

For those who do consulting work or any freelance IT work, in particular those who operate through their own LLC, do you carry liability insurance? If you do carry insurance, do you have both Errors and Omissions as well as General Liability? Have you deal with any insurance products that are tailored toward IT professionals?

    • SMB / Enterprise Hardware for Linux Environment

So these two things have lit a fire inside me:

      https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/1607552-best-way-to-get-a-linux-job
      and
      http://www.smbitjournal.com/2015/06/make-your-business-jealous/

The next step is becoming less ignorant about the hardware used by Linux shops (learning has to start somewhere, right?). Am I right in assuming said SMB shops would/could use the same Dell PowerEdge hardware we use where I am and expect CentOS to have drivers to support it?

@scottalanmiller Thanks! So many things I want to do and learn. Just have to remember to approach things the same I do when eating an elephant.

Step 1: Find the elephant gun.

Step 2: Bring a big fork.

And eat one bite at a time 😛

    • Backing up and restoring Server 2012 R2 scheduled tasks

So I recently discovered that the tasks we have setup on our web server were in no way being archived. Clearly, this needed to change, as when everything blows up, I doubt our devs are going to remember every task and their parameters.

I took the opportunity to solve the problem and cut some baby teeth with PowerShell. I used it regularly with administering Exchange Online, but I haven't done much script development.

What prompted me to do something with PowerShell is the fact that Yosemite Server Backup cannot see the folder C:\Windows\System32\Tasks without me altering NTFS permissions on that folder. I decided it wouldn't be a good idea to do that, so I've created a solution that puts the data I want in a folder that Yosemite can see and subsequently add to the nightly backup.

Also took the opportunity to make a GitHub repository -- that I actually won't delete, as I've played with GitHub a few times in the past. So here you go! 🙂

    • RE: Twilio as a SIP provider

Here are some numbers. Here are a few things to note. First, minutes are as accurate as I can get from my CDR cross-referencing tasks. Second, a "normal" Windstream bill is around $750. This month was the worst of the toll-fraud. Third, add about $5 / month for a Vultr instance for Twilio or Voip.ms. Fourth, savings will be event more when if cut out some DIDs, as we're not using more than 50 at the moment.

      Edit: Removed incorrect figures.
