I read that as a laptop that was opening and closing on its own. I was going to suggest sprinkling with holy water.

@gjacobse My guess was right about the zoom slider. I just enjoyed the assumption that I'd magically know exactly what she did and how to fix it. 😛

@Dashrender said in One man IT shop looking for additional help options when needed. Hire a MSP?:

Jared at Bundy and Assoc, and Scott at NTG are both ITSP. They can do as much or as little as you want. The one thing they have the hardest time providing is local hands. Of course it's not impossible, just more challenging (I've seen Scott post "looking for local hands in ABC location" several times).

Eddie Jennings Services, LLC has provided some local hands work for NTG in the past. 🙂

I agree with the others. You start by documenting what you have (and in that effort, create your system of future documentation). Once that's done, then you can triage. Likely I would start with patching the most vulnerable, followed by knowing your licensing state.

I win! CEO sticker shock from our last two Windstream bills has resulted me in having a new drop-everything project, which is returning to my old, derailed project of Get-us-a-VoIP-solution-that-doesn't-have-a-T1-and-doesn't-restrict-us-to-Altigen-hardware. 😄

@pete-s said in Local SMTP relay?:

Instead of having a bunch of VMs connect directly to an external SMTP server to send emails, I'd like to set up a local SMTP relay. So VMs will all connect to the relay and then the relay will connect to the external SMTP server.

What software should I be looking at? Postfix? It will run on linux of course.

      +1 for Postfix

Difference? Isn't RAID 10 just two RAID 5 arrays in the same box?

Win for IT! I walked the department head who requested this queue logic through the flow chart, and she thought it was fine (even with that one user logging in and out of a queue).

      Today's gem:

User: Paper shredder in [another user]'s office has died after 10 years. I can find the identical one [from a vendor] but [it's used, and I'm not comfortable buying used]. Any thoughts on where to find the same one?

Me: The odds of you finding an identical replacement for a 10 year old device are slim to none. Better approach would be determine desired features, set a price point, and go shopping.

User: Let me see what I can come up with. 🙂
