The recommendations are based on the original bit. RDP alone has essentially no requirements at all. But if they need to do other things, then that would be the driver of requirements, RDP is a red herring.

That's fair, it does conflict because I said "just needs RDP".

I pulled the trigger on a cheapo Dell Refurb. Will do great for this specific scenario. Thanks gentlemen!

    • Backblaze B2 VS Wasabi

Who has experience with both of these? Which one is better and why? Who has the better API?

      Thanks!

@scottalanmiller I've used BB for testing and it was fine. I'll give a Wasabi a fair comparison, but will probably go with BB.

      Thanks for the input gents.

    • CentOS - What is the current opinion here?

So I have 1 server that needs migrated from CentOS8. What is the current state/opinion here about migration? Ubuntu is a clear choice, and most likely the path I will take, but wanted to get some other opinions as well. Is anyone using CentOS stream in a production scenario?

    • Reboot on ping loss

My office has Comcast business (cable). About twice a month, we lose Internet and the only way to fix it is to just reboot the Comcast modem. Anyone have any recommendations for a smart outlet / pdu that will power cycle and outlet on loss of connectivity? There are a ton of them out there.

@AdamF I like the idea of a Raspberry Pi with MeshCentral as an agent for remote access.

And Mesh Central will run perfectly fine on a Pi OS?

I finally spun up a MC server VPS. How is everyone securing this? Besides the fact that I can setup 2FA for this, if I don't want to put this behind any proxy, what is the best approach to secure the web UI?

@syko24 I didn't have a closing } in one of my sections so it was ignoring some of the config. Fixed.

      Thanks!

@AdamF said in Nextcloud Install question:

Does anyone install Nextcloud (On Ubuntu latest version) using snap?

I did, and everything was going fine. But then I wanted to change the default storage location for all of the media to a directory "/data" I cannot for the life of me figure out what config/permissions are incorrect. But taking a step back, is installing via Snap recommended (for home use)

Disregard. I went with a manual install and was able to change the path quite easily. Downloading/syncing all my stuff from Backblaze B2 now!

    • RE: Unifi cloud controller going the way of home office?

I was looking at the Omada line recently too. I still have not found a direct replacement for the EdgeRouter lineup. Which is a real shame, because they are such great devices. Then I found Omada on a blog somewhere but haven't pulled the trigger on getting a unit to try. I might have to though, as I have been waiting for an EdgeRouter 4 for over a year or more.

    • Small office replacement network

So I have a very small project that I am going to do "pro bono" for a homeless shelter in my town. Requirements are very basic. They need a new Firewall/router, 12 port PoE switch, and probably 2 WIFI access points. In previous times, my "go to" for an inexpensive but great solution for something like this would have been a Ubiquiti edge router 4, a TP-link or Ubiquiti Edge switch (poe), and a Ubiquiti Access point or 2. I have not been impressed with Ubiquiti lately however. So I'm looking at other options. Has anyone used Aruba InstantOn switches or APs or Engenius? Again, this is a small (prob 12 people) non profit homeless shelter that has a very small budget. I'm doing the work and install for free, but they will be paying for the equipment. Any suggestions from the group on the above?

    • RE: Proxmox install / setup questions

@AdamF said in Proxmox install / setup questions:

I am changing over 2 Hyper-V servers to ProxMox. I run Proxmox at home, but am going to give this a go at the office. As I understand it, I can setup 2 identical servers, and replicate the VMs back and forth. (not HA, just simply replicate for backup/maintenance windows, etc.)

Assuming this is the case, 2 questions.

      1. What is the best storage format to use in Proxmox? ( I have SSDs on these servers in case it matters...I heard that ZFS is hard on SSDs?)
      2. I have multiple NICs on the servers, specifically, 2 10 G NICs. Can I specify a NIC when replicating VMs between the 2 servers? For example, if I can direct connect the 2 server's 10G NICs with an ethernet cable for replication, that would be the best scenario.

      Thanks!

Found my answer to item 2. Apparently you can do this via a config file.

@travisdh1 Thanks for that info. I've used HP switching before, but that was probably 15 years ago. I know Juniper is fantastic, and so is the price tag. 🙂

    • COLO Switching & Power

For those of you that have workloads in a COLO facility, what are you all using for network switching? Ideally, I'd like to upgrade a network switch I have to a new switch with dual power supplies. (1 power supply goes to PDU 1 in the rack and the other goes to PDU2 in the rack) Any product recommendations for a 24 or 48 port managed switch with dual power supplies?

What products/solutions are you using for single corded equipment for power redundancy? An automatic transfer switch of some sort?
