My issue with a train, or anything that isn't squarly anchored away from zombies is a big risk.
Trains are a much smaller risk compared to hoarding up in a building, but still...
Not moving, you're dying.
Depends on how long you need to do it for.
Over a year or two forget land transportation. It's impractical and I think most people here are undervaluing how quickly things degrade when they're not maintained.
Trains for example - don't see any heavy duty diesel mechanics around here
That's my point, if an IT person can't maintain it (as is the conversation here) we'd have to find someone alive to do it.
Until we were able to get some where far enough away to get out to sea / island without any zombies.
Providing zombies can't swim that's fairly easy here. Rest of you might be screwed
Open invitation to my island(s) are extended to all y'all
(moderated) floats....
Mods float? I know how to test this specious claim

Modern gasoline has a shelf life of 100 days on average. That's with ethanol blends. You can get ~5 years with regular treatment but after that you're pretty much out of luck. I'm not sure about diesel but it's probably similar to the ~5 year mark. The good news is that you can also burn kerosene which, probably wouldn't be scavenged by people as much as diesel fuel would be. Not as efficient but probably more available.

Just had to fill my gas tank with new gas after it has sat for many, many months. It liked the new gas much better.

So the shelf life of 100's of years is wrong... ??!!

What is the shelf life on diesel?
It's like gasoline, it would last for decades or centuries.

better fuel is propane...but it doesnt have the same btu as gas or diesel
-
@gjacobse that was a jab at @scottalanmiller he said fuel last decades or centuries.

Better be taking care of those propane tanks!

No - unless you want to make Thermite..
Which isn't useless with zombies.

No - unless you want to make Thermite..
Which could be handy if you need to do some quick and dirty welding of thick iron/steel.

Not fast enough. Probably be good for sabotage but then you'd have to get close enough. It would be too loud and bright, depending on the type of zombies, to use for breaching storage areas for loot. Although It would also have the potential to damage anything inside.
-
Now there is an idea.... what about zombies combined with the middle ages? Zombies inside armour and stuff! Whoa

In Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, they had 'walkers' chained in a warehouse, anyone who wandered in might be attacked. But if you were the one who chained them, you would know there was a path you would navigate.

I think zombies in armor would just be stationary zombies. That armor was upwards of 100 pounds.
-
And since we can assume zombies generally lack strength, adding 100 plus pounds onto their already dead bodies would effectively make them boat anchors.
-
But catapulting zombie bits to infect the enemy.....
-
True you could catapult zombies to infect others, but if we're looking at this from a Walking Dead perspective, the virus is airborne. Just breathing infects everyone, and upon death do you turn.
Now using zombies to try and infect faster, yeah I could see it..

Sounds oddly like small pox blankets.
