Awwww snap, just found the nonstop flights to Rochester. Maybe $30 more than changing planes (and sitting for 3 hours) in Newark, NJ (shudder).

No Jet Blue from Atlanta.... United and American are the only 2 options. Now to decide where I have to change planes, because it must be a requirement that my check bag get lost on this trip... never once have I changed planes and not had my bag lost for a day or 2.
So wear three pairs of clothing to cover you...
Three pants, three shirts, three pairs of socks, three pair of underwear......
Sure you'll be warm for the travel but you can take it off when you get to the hotel.....
LOL

Orlando to Syracuse is pretty cheap with Jet Blue. You can get round trips flights for less than $300
We generally fly Allegiant but I think their closest hub is Elmira. We can generally fly for ~$140 round trip.
I have flown Allegiant before, but they fly out of Sanford which is about 40 extra miles round trip for me and then you have to get from Elmira to Syracuse or in this case Rochester so it really isn't any cheaper to fly to central NY.

wow,.. bad luck. I've had airlines lose my bag twice, and it was on the return flight so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Orlando to NYC is $79 then take the train to Syracuse

I am generally a cheapskate, but when it comes to travel I want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible. I wont spend $1k on a ticket either, but if I can get a non stop flight for $300-400 I would jump all over it.

They always find it, but it's a hassle. Non stop flights are easy peasy in that regard. Bag stays on the plane I'm on.

I hate Atlanta airport. It is an absolute nightmare.

Everybody hates it. But at least it is enormous and I get a nice, long walk to my plane. Pro tip: never take the little train that runs up the concourse. Takes just as long as walking, but it's hot, crowded, and smelly.

Drive time from Buffalo or Syracuse is also about an hour.
Of course you'd need to rent a car if you chose this route.
If it were me, I'd almost certainly use Amtrak from either of those. Depends on the time of day, of course.
What if you wanted to travel the area or were coming in early and wanted to hang around the falls or the wineries early?
I'd rent the car after the conference and round trip it and still use Amtrak to and from the distant airports in most cases.

Normally cheap to Rochester, too.
-
Keep in mind to rent a car for a day would be easy at the airport. Especially considering shuttle to/from hotel is free
-
And others who have said it (@aaronstuder, I think) ... what is so awesome about Amtrak?

I had bags lost between Istanbul and Athens recently that caused me to miss a flight to Crete. What a mess.

One of my least favourite airports. Although if you are not flying Delta it isn't as bad.
-
NEVER FLY DELTA!! EVER!

One of the only choices from here. Unless you like sitting on the ground for an hour or more, or changing panes multiple times.

Those sound like far better options than Delta. Last time I flew Delta they just left with us at the gate. They had probably overbooked and so just closed the doors and left even though we had come from a connecting flight and were on time. I avoid them like the plague. Worst airlines I've ever dealt with. They may love to fly, but they hate passengers.

I've flown Delta 90% of the times I've flown, never had any issues. United, American, on the other hand.... like the airborne equivalent of a rusty 1981 corolla.
