I don't agree with the buy every other year. But I suppose it could be close - and well the console makers are now playing catch up again to get 4K out there, so with the Xbox 1 and PS4, even if you bought a year ago.. you're going to be buying again soon probably.

Right, and with three different makers, if each releases every six years that's one every other year if you are the kind to be addicted to always having the latest.

Really? Most gamers I know have two. Several have three. Three and Four if you include a gaming PC. Even some non-gamers I know have an Xbox and Wii.

We are very casual and had everything... PC, PS, XBOX and Wii. I finally put my foot down about the consoles and we phased them out. The WiiU was such garbage it pushed us over the brink. Steam made the consoles just seem like such a bad idea. Steam put the stake in them for sure. PC used to have negatives, now, it really doesn't.

Even so, though, going to have the gaming PC plus the Shield with is yet another console, actually. It's just more like a PC than a normal console.

I phased out consoles with the latest generation. A lot of gamers I know are doing the same. They don't see the value in having a PC, that they spent a few thousand dollars on, and an Xbox/PS/Wii that will collect dust. The only argument I've see for consoles are party games that can't effectively be played on a computer. Although with the Steam Controllers and the new Xbox (For PC) Controllers that is going to be less of an issue I think.

Yeah, Steam has totally taken away the console values. All of the social stuff, the four controllers with one dongle and all that kind of stuff has been addressed. I don't see any value in consoles outside of marketing.

For playing on a regular PC. If you get a Steam Machine or the Steam Link you don't need a dongle. But for *nix or Windows PCs you will need it.

Only because the dongle is pre-installed on the inside of the chassis. It still uses the dongle on the Steam Machines.

True. Is it accessible without opening the chassis?

Would be hard to get to something inside the chassis without opening it Same as any standard internal USB slot.

PS4 Neo, that's the new one that I was thinking of. People addicted to the latest and greatest will need to upgrade their PS4 just like PC gamers upgrading when new GPUs come out. I heard a rumour that XBox One is doing a similar release of an upgrade.

Why is this system less powerful than a 3 year old PC
Why am I paying to connect to an online service where I pay more for a game online than at a physical store? (PS Plus)
Why can't I upgrade the HDD, easily, myself? (XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )
Why does everything cost so much? There's, what seems to be, a 20% console tax that you add on to the price of EVERYTHING

Assuming you keep servers for 5+ years, are you saying it's pointless to get an HPE if you don't carry a support contract for the entire life of the server? most HPEs come with a 3 year warranty/support. After 5 years the cost of support is generally so high to make it rarely worthwhile, assuming you can live without the server for a few days while ordering a replacement - and that would only be the case in a major system failure situation.

It wasn't. When did I or anyone say Not to use HPE hardware? I only complained that without an active support contract you can't get firmware updates.

This statement that began the discussion of firmware. It says HP in a thread about HP. Does HP require this or is this only HPE and it was mistakenly added to this thread?

Aww - yes exactly - So he had a 5 year old server that he wanted to update, and he couldn't get updates any more on a server that was purchased before this change, and now that maintenance now costs as much as a new server. ug!
