Tomb Raider on Steam - $60
http://store.steampowered.com/app/391220/This isn't a sale on it. That's not the price that PC gamers pay.
-
My friends mainly only played mainstream titles, they would be 5-10 games a year. that's $150-600 a year in games, and play the shit out of them.
Of course the main person I'm talking about was unable to maintain his own PC, so his issues were really more around the fact that he had problems with Windows (and hardware - he did always want the latest and greatest) but you take away that want for the latest and greatest when it's just not an option.
yes it was all emotional for him

Tomb Raider is $20 full price and has dropped to $3 on sale!!

Just $3!! What's it on XBOX One?

That's why people are being pushed to Steam Machines now. None of that "maintain your computer" stuff. It's a PC that acts exactly like a console. You just buy it and games target it and it takes care of itself. There is a reason that those are so popular.

YOu have to look for US Currency.

All PC game prices are inflated right now as we head into the Steam Summer Sale, the second biggest sales event in the industry (Christmas is bigger.) So right now you are seeing the prices held up while people lose their patience till the end of June when nearly every game ever goes to near zero. It's insane. If you don't live by the sales you are just setting your gaming money on fire.
-
I am hoping to get an NVidia Shield TV gaming system this summer, too. My wife has already approved the $299 for it. It's basically the highest end Android gaming console. NVidia X1 processor, 3GB RAM, nice Steam-like controller, exclusive games. Supposed to be really nice.

By that logic you just get them a second hand Dreamcast and they are good to go.

I warned my wife that as soon as FFIX goes on sale I'm spending money, no questions asked.

I think that the price savings are very hard to figure out. As a PC gamer, I buy one nice laptop and we will see how long it lasts for me. But it is a cost that I have to spend anyway, so hard to figure out the gaming portion of that. But it is definitely not 100%. It's like 20%. So $150 - $300 investment, let's say.
Now what is a new consoler? $400? That's a little more, but comparable. But if you are tempted to buy new PCs over and over again, you are also the person who likely buys lots of consoles. So that is actually $400 for the One and $400 for the PS4 and $200 for the WiiU. These come out often enough that at best you are buying one every other year and at worst every year! And one of these consoles just did a small update... that's like a PC upgrade. So there is that to worry about, too.
Console gamers that I know often spend quite a bit more on their consoles for lots of "different" gear that is all about the same instead of one machine that kicks the crap out of all of them.

My wife loves that I scour the sales daily (literally.) I know exactly at what time each service does their sales of the day. It takes effort to know that you are always getting a great price, but we have an amazing library for very little money because of it.
FF9 is the only one out that I don't have on the PC yet. It's on my watch list. I assume that we will get a good deal on it at the end of the month. I'm ready. I've got nearly 300 items on the wish list!!
-
I don't agree with the buy every other year. But I suppose it could be close - and well the console makers are now playing catch up again to get 4K out there, so with the Xbox 1 and PS4, even if you bought a year ago.. you're going to be buying again soon probably.

I think it really depends on your expectation. If you want to only play AAA games on release then a console is probably overall cheaper. As the consoles age the developers artificially impair the performance of their new games to not stress the current console, whereas PC games are constantly pushing the edge of the available hardware.
I'm in a similar camp as @scottalanmiller. I play a lot of old games, and the newer ones I play I get some time after they release (CivVI being the notable exception).

I'm eyeballing that one too... I'm playing through it on my laptop using ePSXE at the moment.

Right, and with three different makers, if each releases every six years that's one every other year if you are the kind to be addicted to always having the latest.

Most people I know have only one, a rare few have two, and I know no one personally who has all three (or four if you count the original Wii)

I don't know any console people who don't have most of them. Only ones that I know that don't have all aren't gamers AND don't have computers at home.
But the SAME logic that says you need to constantly update your PC even though it still works fine... says that you need all of the consoles and all of the latest ones. Either the PC is cheaper because you don't actually have to keep upgrading. Or it is cheaper because you only need one. Any apples to apples, it wins outside of casual gamers who don't use computers.

Really? Most gamers I know have two. Several have three. Three and Four if you include a gaming PC. Even some non-gamers I know have an Xbox and Wii.
