Whether or not it's "swearing" is in the eye of the fucking beholder...

True as that is - 'swearing' doesn't have to be used as often as it is. Trust me,.. Having worked with computer for 30 years, having been in the US Military, and around others - I can use quite a bit of profanity. However I chose not to use it in a forum setting.

For my actual contribution to the discussion:

I see no issue with it, this is hardly a forum that will be browsed avidly by children. Having said that, it would be sad to see it's use become common place as that detracts from it's.... je ne sais quoi.

For an unscientific but interesting none the less look at the topic of swearing the Mythbusters did an episode on it. Relevant especially to our discussion here is swearing's ability to relieve stress / pain. Less relevant but actually hilarious would be a quote from the Trailer Park Boys.

That is your opinion and whether or not it is mine does not matter apparently.

Frankly I was amazed at how long it wasn't moderated - at least the title.

My 2 cents - Titles should always be moderated, but the OP, if about an actual product name, should be left alone. And tags for a real product should be allowed, but only used to reference the aforementioned product(s).

Probably not, but it would be nice if they felt comfortable using it AND if parents felt comfortable with them being here. Of course, in most work environments, like in NYC for sure, you would hear far worse in the office all of the time. No question there. Although there is something different about things being in print, than when things are spoken. It's not fleeting background noise, it's on peoples' screens as managers and coworkers walk by or whatever.

Only the title ever was. Only that part shows up on other lists, like the RSS feed titles, recent list, unread list. So if we mod it there, and keep it in the topic, people know to peruse it or not at their discretion. It doesn't "pop up" when not wanted.

Like the "Anything Goes" random thread... people are warned that people will let loose there and that it is NSFW.

this is the difference between a casual conversation and a post on Twitter or FB... the print/foreverness of it.

I had wondered about the tags (there isn't one yet, moderated or not) but had not formed an opinion. But I think that I agree, a tag for this case would be fine, as is the link. It's really only in the thread title that I see concern and mostly because it is unavoidable AND out of context when seen.

Of course the seeming Puritan views being pushed here have nothing to do with it. Japanese children grow up hearing what Americans consider swearwords used regularly on shows aimed at toddlers. It simply is not a thing to fear.

*Not saying they don't have there own slate of issues. jsut swearing isn't one of them.

I agree, I don't have an issue with it personally. But lots of people do or might, which gets into the question of... how far do you go to placate people who feel or might feel or we imagine will be offended? it's tough. all of us regulars don't care. It's the people reading casually or not piping up that we have to imagine what they will care about or not.
