A little repetitive, even.

I am all for using places like Mangolassi and Spiceworks as sounding boards for ideas and thought processes. I've learned more in my last year or two on here than my entire time on SW, simply because here at ML much less gets lost in the noise.
-
@dafyre That's a scale problem. Once ML is a big as SW you have the same problem all over again.

Well - good mods can really help with that.

True. But I know enough people on here (the regulars that post) that it'd be easier for me to sort out the noise from the good comments. Over on SW, you are right, there are simply too many people.
But as @Dashrender said... Good mods can also separate the wheat from the chaff.

The problem I'm finding with Spiceworks, in its current state, is that I'm not really learning anything anymore. It really doesn't have as much value as it did a few years ago when I was a bit greener. Most of the interesting threads are usually buried beneath a tenfold pile of redundancy. Even featured discussions/questions are frequently topics that have been discussed NUMEROUS times over the years.
So many dead horses regularly being beaten into the the dirt.

And I'm really sick of seeing "What's the best/yourFavorite _____?" conversations. Targetted questions like "What is the most economical video card that is compatible with Solidworks 2016?" are great! I might actually learn something.
"What's the bestest linux distro for laptops?" questions are a waste of time. They get 20 pages of feedback of no importance or relevance to ANYTHING useful, yet garner a large amount of attention. gag

One thing that may help out ML is that there is no rating system based on number of posts/etc. so you don't have people trying to "move up to the next level" so to speak by posting garbage.
-
I love friendly and healthy discussion about a certain topic. If I'm not posting for help (as in, CRAP this is broken how do I fix it?!), I'm posting because I want the opinions and experience of the members of the board.
What drives me nuts is when people post statements similarly to "well if you're not doing X then you're an idiot." That is NOT HELPFUL.
Also what drives me nuts is when people don't take the time to read the entire OP before responding. On SW more often than not I've had a lot of quick spastic replies to posts I've made and it's obvious they either didn't read the OP completely or did not understand what I was asking. They often feel like "points" posts. I then have to regurgitate my OP multiple times and it's frustrating.
I participate in communities like SW and ML because I am the first to admit that I do NOT know nor have experienced everything from every angle. Having input from the diversity of these communities helps me grow as an IT professional. And, who knows, maybe my post will help someone out in the future.

Speak for yourself - I'm trying for first place in the number of posts on ML category. Though considering Scott has more than 3 times as many posts as me.. probably won't happen in my lifetime.
And for those that don't know... I'm totally joking!

I tihnk @scottalanmiller has more than the rest of us in the top 10 combined, lol.

Nope, the next 8 combines
The gap from 2nd to 3rd is nearly 2 to 1.

We've heard from several sources that there is more activity here, than there. At least in the "non watercooler" areas. If you watch at slow times when both sites are slow, ML is a little busier typically. If you watch the same post in both places, we see as much as 40x the traffic on the SW sites. Some big vendors and even some SW insiders have commented on how much busier ML is.

And bad ones will exacerbate it.

I'm sure that scale is a factor, but there are very big different factors at play as well. How users are attracted is massively different. ML only attracts through people reading discussions or through word of mouth. SW primarily attracts through the recruitment of people using the free tool. Those are very different pools of users.

That's a good point. ML actually suffers in that people tend to learn material and let it go so the traffic goes way down because there isn't the insane banter of repeating unfounded points ad nauseum, ignoring thousands of supporting posts and threads and having to be shown how they missed even basic research over and over again. ML doesn't even have a single thread asking about RAID 5 or SAN, actually, that I can remember. On SW, it's bread and butter to rehash that same argument a few times a week.

That was avoided on purpose. The same logic and discussion existed on SW, but the purpose of the communities was different. So the same logic of "this generates tons of garbage posts" meant it was ruled out for ML and ruled in for SW.

Given that it is a "points community" and that there are specifically the biggest rewards for "post once per thread and don't bother to return to it" and "post quickly as early posts get more points" that behaviour that you see is exactly what they have designed the system to produce.

Did you include the fact that I'm in first and eleventh places?
