I had made an assumption with the name that they were related to XS. I didn't know they weren't, but just adding xen to everything.

XenApp is the basis for Windows RDS.

          So Xenapp existed before RDS?

When people say that they run Citrix, it has always meant MetaFrame, not virtualization. Citrix only claim to fame is in making the RDP and ICA protocols for remote Windows desktops. That was always their thing. That's why we were confused when that consultant said that he "ran Citrix." That phrase means XenApp (MetaFrame) in the same incorrect way that running VMware means vSphere. Both are incorrect uses, but everyone accepts that saying the company name of those two companies means their famous "only thing that they are known for" products. Or Novell with Netware.

Yes. MetaFrame was first, then Microsoft licensed part of it to make Terminal Server (TS.) MetaFrame got rebranded XenApp. TS got rebranded RDS.

Thank you for that, I never knew that.

Similarly, around the same time, Microsoft needed a database option so they paid for a license of Sybase. Over the years they rebranded and modified Sybase as SQL Server so the two have diverged a lot now. But originally they were the same product.

This all stems from where Windows came from. When DOS was clearly dying, MS and IBM worked together to make OS/2. They parted ways, Microsoft renamed their OS/2 effort Windows NT, IBM kept the OS/2 name. They are very different now, but their first release was effectively identical.

Always did, more or less. I think for a while they bundled TS in it and install it all together. Now it automates the install. All the same though, they made TS/RDS for MS and took out the high end features (ICA being the biggest one) and when you install MetaFrame/XenApp they put them back in.
