No, wait for @scottalanmiller to wake up this morning.
He sleeps?
@scottalanmiller has been inactive for 6 hours. Does inactive = sleep? I can't imagine anything else would make him unplug. He did start sleepwalking, so I wouldn't be surprised if he started posting while sleeping; it's the inevitable next step in his evolution.

They done a few updates and now use Gravatar (https://en.gravatar.com/) to serve your avatar to the forum.
We've been using Gravatar only for a good while. When we first started you could upload a pic directly but it got disabled a good while ago. It seems now though any not through gravatar have been deleted.

Just waking up here. Avatar handling was broken in the move to NodeBB 0.9.0. They had customers who demanded the break, they say, and so here we are. In the move our old "mix of methods" was removed and we were forced to break some no matter what. We went to 100% Gravatar as the option for the avatars.
This caused us to expose an additional problem where the password hashes in NodeBB at some point became corrupt (on a case by case basis, many were fine.)
So if you have set up a Gravatar and your avatar still does not work, what we've found needs to be done is this:
- Make Sure Your Gravatar is Set to G
- Change Your Email Address in MangoLassi to Something Else and Change It Back Again
So far this these two things have worked every time.

Yeah, the change was that the site forced us to go exclusively to Gravatar (or exclusively to local.) We have mostly not allowed local, that was only some early accounts. So going to Gravatar, in theory, broke the fewest.

I have a semi related question - what does gravatar get out of hosting our icons other than tracking data? And personally - not to thrilled about that.

Gravatar is part of the Wordpress family. They use it as part of their hosting systems. It lowers their costs and increases their value on their products. It's a huge marketing leader for them to get their name out there. It helps make them one of the largest web hosts out there.

So Wordpress offers it's own hosting as well as your ability to install Wordpress on your own systems to host your own if you want?

Yes, WordPress.com is the giant commercial WordPress hosting service. They've been doing that since pretty much day one. WP is part of a massive (now) conglomerate of web hosting services and technologies. They build the leading anti-spam system (Akismet) and tons of other stuff. Much like NodeBB does but on a massive scale. They make lots of open source software and tons of free hosted tools and use it all to promote their commercial hosting services or support services.
