Planning MangoCon

That's a luxury hotel and the convention could be in the same building. Rooms start at $95 for a normal room and suites go at $125 for the beginning price of the top ones and there are several options in between. That's walking distance from my house here currently and there are tons of cheap options nearby, within a few blocks people should be able to get rooms for half of those prices if needed. These are rack rates and don't reflect a discount for booking the whole place or a big block of rooms like we would do.
The place has its own restaurant, tons of food nearby and its own Tiki Bar that I'm sure would stay open all night. that's how bars work here.... open till the money stops coming in.
Pool and stuff in case people need to lounge. Lots for family members to do in case they come along. Very safe area. The lake is about ten minutes walk away as is Central Park. Lots of playgrounds, the beach, tours, volcanoes, etc.

Well I talked to two vendors today they are unwilling to do anything at least for our first one outside of the US. So for the first one we are doing it here in the states. Vendors are who make it possible. Now those that aren't in the Us can get together just for fun

Mango Vacations!

Seriously. What if we promoted the "social" aspect of the conference more and encouraged people to bring families with them to be part of the festivities? Not the conference itself, but had things for them to do during the day (tours, shopping, etc.) in groups and they could join for stuff in the evenings like the heavy social time? I wonder if that would be a different take on the conference situation. And I wonder if it would be good or bad. Lots of people go to these conferences to escape. But lots miss their families too.

It might be... for the first one I don't want to take too much on but is certainly something I would be willing to do next year or even as a mid year social only thing. A lot of people can only afford these things because work pays for it too so something we need to keep in mind I think. I am really lucky as my family is in IT so they come with
