I like it but I'm sure there is some evil corporate who have that name somewhere.
Sadly I'm sure United Airlines would find a way to shut it down, even though it has nothing to do with flying.

Like the airlines.

What would we do without the corporates and their legion of lawyers.
Can't we all just get along...
-
@Breffni-Potter Nope! You have offended me! You'll be hearing from my lawyer!

Des Moines is cheap, centrally located, good booze laws (non restrictive), and the people are great....
Seriously? Someone just recommended Des Moines? lol
Have you ever been there? Want a cocktail at 8am? For 1/2 the price of anywhere else in the US? DSM kicks ass.
-
I'm up for Iowa. I hear that they have the best state fair in the state.

Downtown DSM is the sh*t.... you can walk everywhere, there is art, culture, great food & drink, did I mention it's CHEAP, there are many tech companies, etc. Ask David Byrne how awesome DSM is....

I'd hope so... otherwise Iowa is a really sad state.

I live 2 hours west of Des Moines in Omaha, NE. Yep I've been to Des Monies (on purpose) many times... though, never for drinks.

So you can/will attest to the awesomeness of DSM? I have friends there, but that town would charm anyone whose mind was open to it... if you think about it being in Iowa, you're likely to shit all over it before you've given it a chance, but it kicks the hell out of many cities I've visited, including Atlanta (as a native, F*CK ATL, nothing but a bunch of disingenuous hipster douchebags).
edit: Omaha is pretty sweet, too. I'm a big fan of the midwest, because I like to eat meat and spend less doing it.
-
I've been to Atlanta 5 times, but only for Dragon Con. I've never visited the city while there. I stayed within 8 blocks of the host hotels the entire time.
Nearly the same can be said for Austin. I've been there twice now, and both times I spent most of the time either at the convention center or 6th St.
I'm guessing UnITed Con would be the same way - spending most of the time at the convention center, and wondering to whatever bar scene we decide upon for after hours. With that mind, pretty much any city would probably be OK assuming you picked one where the hotels, meeting space and bars are all within walking distance.
-
Picking a place does entail a lot of research. But at least you know several of the factors that are considered must haves for this group.
Space large enough to hold attendees
Walking distance for that number of guesstimated rooms
decide bar scene (even just one good bar would probably be OK) or controlled space where we BYOD
catering
Vendors to inviteWhat else?
-
There is tons of research.
Cost of checking out a facility cost of planning with the facility.
Cost of planning, swag, alcohol.
Hotel rooms
Travel to/from hotels
Travel to/from Airports.
The logistics are making my head spin a bit. -
If we did this outside of the US say South America or something.... Who would not be able to attend due to bosses vetoing the idea?
The first one will not happen outside of the US just so you know.

South America is REALLY far unless we are doing Venezuela which seems extreme. I would say let's talk Central America and Caribbean. Safe, close and cheap.
Assume that the cost would be lower (outside of the flight and not necessarily that) and that the travel time would not be much more.

As long as the cost wasn't more than 20% more in total than in the US (hopefully the same or less) my boss wouldn't care. I already have a passport, but might need to renew by that time.

Going to Europe is the killer. While it might be a bit less in the winter, summer 2012 cost me $1800 round trip. The hotels were also easily double what I normally pay in the US (or the same if I'm in SF or NYC).

Dominica needs to do some of the planning. For us $270 down to here wasn't a deal, it was splurging. We could have gotten a bit cheaper. I've gone to Europe (one way) for $135. Important things to do are avoid London like the plague, the taxes there alone make a flight really expensive.
