Unitrends Redefines "Free" Virtual Backup

what's the cost to unlock the 1tb limit?
You just purchase UEB normally at that point. You go to the normal UEB licensing costs.
-
OK, what makes a good target for these types of backups? tape? NAS? what's your favorite flavor everyone?

NAS is best for nearly all factors but one..... CryptoLocker and similar encryption attacks. Online NAS can be vulnerable to this in some cases. Thankfully UEB runs on Linux and so is a huge air gap in code between a Windows attack and your data. But the NAS has to be exclusive to UEB, not connected or allowed to connect to other systems or a desktop infection of CL could wipe out your backups (we've seen it actually happen with Veeam.)
If you consider the risks and isolate the system properly, NAS is great because it is fast, flexible and always online (fast to back up, fast to restore, no extra human intervention.)
-
Tape is super expensive and requires a lot of manual work and carries a lot of risks except that it is 100% effective against things like CryptoLocker even without you needing to do anything special.
-
Cloud can be good, but can carry the NAS risks. Cloud also carries higher cost for large backups and slow restore times. But it is super flexible and can easily restore to disparate locations.
-
And how much for a license?

That answer is easy.... call your Unitrends partner and ask. It's not a set price like a soda at McDonald's. You have to get the current price and the current deals and all that.

It seems a bit too much like the Spiceworks model.
Give away a free app but make it compulsory to join the community/get adverts.
I'll try the product in a lab but I'm a bit wary of it.
Agreed. I'll stick with the 500gb version. I don't care to have random accounts tied to my email that I don't use. Also unitrends is big on using all information for sales calls. The current free UEB was like that. Nonstop sales calls. I don't want that started again.

They'll have real fun with me, I've got a little black book of choice replies to cold calls.

I assume that using a fake email will work? Or just a spam account.

Ha, the worst nightmare of these marketing products. Fake data.
"Look we have 1 million trackable leads!"
"Um...they are @zoo.com addresses" -
@Breffni-Potter They have to expect that.
-
You likely have to verify the email to use it.
-
@StrongBad - It was hilarious, a few guys were talking about how you can get a 5TB backup by doing exactly that at Spiceworld.

That's silly since they said that they were not monitoring it and they were just trusting you to only use 1TB as it is. So going through that effort and tainting their database to get more than the allotted amount doesn't seem to serve any purpose. They could just use more than 1TB anyway since it is the honour system.

The type of people to do this generally don't care, they were fairly vocal about it yesterday. I just find that mentality so funny, their first reaction is how to cheat the system.

Yeah, there is certainly a lot of that.

In two weeks you get a phone call: SAM, I see you are using 1.6 TB of source data on our free Unitrends package... Would you like to upgrade now?
